Cross-country Skiing At The 1968 Winter Olympics – Men's 50 Kilometre
The men's 50 kilometre cross-country skiing competition at the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, France, was held on Saturday 17 February at Autrans. Gjermund Eggen of Norway was the defending World champion while Sixten Jernberg of Sweden was the defending Olympic champion. Each skier started at half a minute intervals, skiing the entire 50 kilometre course. Of the 51 athletes who started the race, 4 did not finish. Ole Ellefsæter of Norway took his second gold medal of the Games after being a part of Norway's winning team in the 4×10 kilometre relay earlier in the games. Competitive cross-country skiing encompasses a variety of race formats and course lengths. Rules of cross-country skiing are sanctioned by the International Ski Federation and by various national organizations. International competitions include the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, the FIS Cross-Country World Cup, and at the Winter Olympic Games. Such races occur over homologated, groomed courses designed to support classic (in-track) and freestyle events, where the skiers may employ skate skiing. It also encompasses cross-country ski marathon events, sanctioned by the Worldloppet Ski Federation, and cross-country ski orienteering events, sanctioned by the International Orienteering Federation. Gunnar Larsson (cross-country Skier)
Ål Lars Gunnar "Hulån" Larsson (born 1 July 1944) is a retired Swedish cross-country skier. He competed at the 1968 and 1972 Winter Olympics in the 15, 30, 50 and 4 × 10 km events and won two medals in 1968: a silver in the 4 × 10 km relay and a bronze over 15 km. In 1972 he finished fourth in the relay and 30 km events. Domestically, Larsson won Swedish titles in the 15 km in 1971 and in the 30 km in 1969. Pauli Siitonen
Pauli Ensio Siitonen (born 3 February 1938) is a retired Finnish cross-country skiing (sport), cross-country skier. He was one of the most successful long-distance cross-country skiers of the 1970s, and in 1973 became the second Finnish skier to win Vasaloppet. Siitonen competed at the 1968 Olympics, sports-reference.com and won the Finlandia-hiihto in Finland and König-Ludwig-Lauf in West Germany. Odd Martinsen
Odd-Willy Martinsen (born 20 December 1942) is a retired Norwegian cross-country skier who competed during the 1960s and 1970s. He won three medals at the Winter Olympics, a gold in the 4 × 10 km relay (1968) and silvers in the 30 km (1968) and the 4 × 10 km relay (1976). Martinsen won five medals at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, a gold in the 4 × 10 km relay (1966), a silver in the 15 km (1970), and bronzes in the 15 km (1966), 30 km (1970), and 4 × 10 km relay (1974). At the 1969 Holmenkollen ski festival, he won the 15 km race. For his cross-country skiing successes in Norway and abroad, Martinsen received the Holmenkollen medal in 1969. Aldo Stella (skier)
Aldo Stella (born 29 January 1943) is an Italian ski mountaineer and former cross-country skier. Stella was born in Asiago. He participated at the 1968 Winter Olympics, when he placed sixth together with Giulio de Florian, Franco Nones and Palmiro Serafini in the 4 × 10 kilometres relay event and seventeenth in the 50 kilometres race of cross-country skiing. Together with his brothers Gianfranco and Roberto he won the 1971 Trofeo Mezzalama as well as together with Gianfranco and Palmiro Serafini the 1973 edition. Kalevi Laurila (5 December 1937 – 13 April 1991) was a Finnish cross-country skier. He competed in all cross-country skiing events at the 1964 and 1968 Olympics and won two medals in the 4 × 10 km relay, placing fourth-eleventh in individual events. At the world championships he won three silver medals, in the 30 km in 1966 and in the 4 × 10 km relay in 1962 and 1966. His last international competition was the 1974 World Championships, where his relay team finished fourth. Assar Rönnlund
Bernt Assar Rönnlund (3 September 1935 – 5 January 2011) was a Swedish cross-country skier. Rönnlund's biggest success was at the 1962 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Zakopane where he won two gold medals (15 km and 4 × 10 km) and a silver (50 km). As a result, he earned the Svenska Dagbladet Gold Medal that year for his championship successes. Rönnlund was the anchorman of the Swedish 4 × 10 km relay team at the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, bringing the team from fourth place to victory. Rönnlund also won the Vasaloppet in 1967 and the 50 km event at the Holmenkollen ski festival twice (1962 and 1968).
