The ladies' 3 × 5 kilometre cross-country relay at the 1956 Winter Olympics was held on 1 February. It was held at the Snow Stadium (''Lo Stadio della neve''), which was about from Cortina. Ten teams and thirty skiers participated in the event. Finland won the event. 1956 Winter Olympics
The 1956 Winter Olympics, officially known as the VII Olympic Winter Games ( it, VII Giochi Olimpici invernali) and commonly known as Cortina d'Ampezzo 1956 ( lld, Anpezo 1956 or ), was a multi-sport event held in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, from 26 January to 5 February 1956. Cortina, which had originally been awarded the 1944 Winter Olympics, beat out Montreal, Colorado Springs and Lake Placid for the right to host the 1956 Games. The Cortina Games were unique in that many of the venues were within walking distance of each other. The organising committee received financial support from the Italian government for infrastructure improvements, but the rest of the costs for the Games had to be privately financed. Consequently, the organising committee was the first to rely heavily on corporate sponsorship for funding. Ildegarda Taffra (30 June 1934 – 7 December 2020) was an Italian cross-country skier who competed in the 1950s. Life She was born in Tarvisio. Competing in two Winter Olympics, she finished eighth in the 3 × 5 km relay at Cortina d'Ampezzo in 1956. Taffra also competed in the 10 km event at the 1952 Winter Olympics in Oslo, but did not finish. Taffra was a six-time national champion and also earned five podium finishes in her career, including four victories. Like her compatriot Fides Romanin, she would be an inspiration to future women cross country skiers for Italy, including Manuela Di Centa, Stefania Belmondo, and Gabriella Paruzzi. Fides Romanin
Fides Romanin (12 November 1934 – 23 October 2019) was an Italian cross-country skier who competed in the 1950s. She was born in Forni Avoltri. She competed in two Winter Olympics, serving as flag bearer for the Italian team at Oslo in 1952. Romanin finished 17th in the women's 10 km in Oslo. Romanin also competed in the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo, finishing 31st in the 10 km and eighth in the 3 × 5 km relay. After her 1959 retirement, Romanin married and raised four children.
