The Cuyahoga River ( , or ) is a river located in Northeast Ohio that bisects the City of Cleveland and feeds into Lake Erie. As Cleveland emerged as a major manufacturing center, the river became heavily affected by industrial pollution, so much so that it caught fire at least 14 times, most famously on June 22, 1969, helping to spur the American environmental movement. Since then, the river has been extensively cleaned up through the efforts of Cleveland's city government and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA). In 2019, the American Rivers conservation association named the Cuyahoga "River of the Year" in honor of "50 years of environmental resurgence". Etymology The name ''Cuyahoga'' is believed to mean "crooked river" from the Mohawk name ''Cayagaga'', although the Mohawk were never in the region alongside European settlers, so this explanation is questionable. The Crooked River is a tributary, long, of the Deschutes River in the U.S. state of Oregon. The river begins at the confluence of the South Fork Crooked River and Beaver Creek. Of the two tributaries, the South Fork Crooked River is the larger and is sometimes considered part of the Crooked River proper. A variant name of the South Fork Crooked River is simply "Crooked River". The Deschutes River flows north into the Columbia River. Crooked River (Massachusetts)
The Crooked River is a small tributary of the Wareham River located entirely within the town of Wareham, Massachusetts, United States. Its source is found in salt marshes and cranberry bogs east of Indian Neck Road, and its mouth empties into the Wareham River opposite Swifts Neck. In all, its length is just over one mile. Flora and fauna Fish from Buzzards Bay swim up the Wareham River and into the Crooked River, although the upper half of the Crooked River goes down to bare mud at extreme low tide. The river is home to a number of birds that feed on the fish, including the kingfisher and the great blue heron. In winter it is home to ducks, Canada geese and occasional swans. Oyster reefs are scattered over the river bottom, and marsh grass lines its banks.
