Craven Street Football Ground
Craven Street Football Ground was a rugby league and a short lived greyhound racing and Association Football stadium located on Craven Street in Hull. Rugby League Hull Kingston Rovers played their first games at the ground from 1895 until 1922 when they moved to a bigger stadium at Old Craven Park with better facilities. Association Football The Hull Albany Association Football Club first used the ground in late 1894 shortly after it was constructed. Junior and school teams used the ground before World War II. Greyhound racing The East Hull Sports Stadium Company opened for racing on Saturday 13 October 1934 and also hosted whippets. The racing was independent (not affiliated to the sports governing body the National Greyhound Racing Club) but only lasted until c.1937. Hull Kingston Rovers
Hull Kingston Rovers are a professional rugby league club based in Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire, England, that competes in the Super League, the top tier of British rugby league. The club has won five league championships, and one Challenge Cup. Formed in 1882, the club joined the Northern Rugby Football Union in 1897. Old Craven Park was a rugby league and greyhound racing stadium in Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. Rugby league Hull Kingston Rovers moved from Craven Street in East Hull to a new ground called Craven Park in 1922. The club had purchased a site behind the tram and bus depot on the eastern end of Holderness Road by Aberdeen Street at a cost of £18,281 and it hosted its first game on 2 September 1922. The ground staged an Ashes series test in 1929 with Australia defeating Great Britain 31–8 in front of 20,000 fans. In the early 1970s Hull Kingston Rovers purchased a site at Winchester Avenue with the aim of building a new stadium there. These plans never came to fruition and the site was later sold to a private developer. The National Greyhound Racing Club was an organisation that governed Greyhound racing in the United Kingdom. History The National Greyhound Racing Club (NGRC) was formed in 1928 and this body would be responsible for regulation, licensing and the rules of racing that came into force on 23 April 1928. It consisted of twelve stewards, one of them senior and most of them with military or police backgrounds. Any greyhound track licensed under NGRC rules would have to adhere to all rules set by them. The National Greyhound Racing Society was a branch of the NGRC responsible for the promotion of the industry. By 1946 the Club employed a 300 strong security service to ensure fair play on its associated tracks.
