Coxsackie-Athens Central School District
Coxsackie-Athens is a rural New York State school district located along the Hudson River, approximately 20 miles south of Albany. Known as C-A, to people in the region, Coxsackie-Athens has around 1,200 students K-12. The district has four schools: Edward J. Arthur Elementary; Coxsackie Elementary; Coxsackie-Athens Middle School; and Coxsackie-Athens High school. The district has a satellite campus in the Village of Athens and a main campus in the Village of Coxsackie where the district office is located. All the schools are located in Coxsackie, except for the Edward J. Arthur school in Athens. Coxsackie is a village in Greene County, New York, United States. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. The village name comes from the native word ''mak-kachs-hack-ing''. When the land was purchased by the Dutch settlers, the name was written as ''Koxhackung''. It is generally translated as "Hoot-owl place" or "place of many owls". The village is in the eastern part of the town of Coxsackie along the Hudson River. Section 2 is one of the eleven sections of the NYSPHSAA. It is made up of high schools from around New York's Capital Region. The schools in the section compete with each other in athletic competition. Schools often compete with other schools outside of the section in tournaments or invitationals such as a cross country invitational in the fall or even sometimes during the regular season, depending on the sport. The section is further divided into leagues based on mostly location but also the size of the school. Coxsackie ( ) is a town in Greene County, New York, United States. The population in the 2020 census was 8,382, a decrease from the 2010 census. The name of the town is said to be derived from a Native American term, but it has various translations ("owl's hoot" is locally common).
