Courvoisier V. Raymond
''Courvoisier v. Raymond'', 23 Colo. 113 (1896), was a case decided by the Colorado Supreme Court that affirmed the use of a reasonableness standard when determining the validity of a mistaken self-defense. Factual background Auguste Courvoisier ran a jewelry store in Denver, and lived in an apartment above the store. On the night of 12 June 1892, a group of men attempted to break into the store. Courvoisier retrieved his revolver and chased them outside. He fired 2-3 shots into the air to drive the group off, which attracted the attention of a group of police officers that came to arrest the intruders. Among these officers was Edwin Raymond. While the other officers apprehended the group of men, Raymond approached Courvoisier, stating that he was a police officer and to stop shooting. Seal Of Colorado
The Seal of the State of Colorado is an adaptation of the territorial seal which was adopted by the First Territorial Assembly on November 6, 1861. The only changes made to the territorial seal design being the substitution of the words, "State of Colorado" and the figures "1876" for the corresponding inscriptions on the territorial seal. The first General Assembly of the State of Colorado approved the adoption of the state seal on March 15, 1877. The Colorado Secretary of State alone is authorized to affix the Great Seal of Colorado to any document whatsoever. Charles Hayt
Charles Denison Hayt (May 20, 1850 – January 8, 1927) was an attorney, district attorney, and jurist from Colorado. He served on the Colorado Supreme Court for nine years, including six years as chief justice. He practiced law and was a regional judge before and after he sat on the Supreme Court. He was the president of the Children's Home Society. He lectured on taxation at the University of Colorado from 1900 to 1908. He and his wife had three children, all of him who died by the end of 1917. He was a member of a number of organizations. Early life and education Born in Poughkeepsie, New York, on May 20, 1850, his parents were Jane (Berry) and Henry Delevan Hayt, who was a farmer that also freighted goods on the Hudson River. Luther Marcellus Goddard
Luther Marcellus Goddard (October 27, 1840 – May 20, 1917) was an associate justice of the Colorado Supreme Court from 1891 to 1901 and from 1905 to 1909. Education and early career Goddard was born in Palmyra, New York and went to elementary school there. His family moved to Abingdon, Illinois, where he completed his secondary schooling. In 1862, he moved to Leavenworth, Kansas and began to read law, then enrolling in the University of Chicago Law School in 1864. He graduated in 1865 and was named class valedictorian. He was admitted to the bar soon after graduating and then returned to Leavenworth. In Leavenworth, Goddard served for two years as deputy county attorney, then he was elected county attorney for two terms. In fall 1871, he was elected to serve in the Kansas legislature.
