''The Black Book of Communism: Crimes, Terror, Repression'' is a 1997 book by Stéphane Courtois, Andrzej Paczkowski, Nicolas Werth, Jean-Louis Margolin, and several other European academics documenting a history of political repression by communist states, including genocides, extrajudicial executions, deportations, and deaths in labor camps and artificially created famines. The book was originally published in France as ''Le Livre noir du communisme: Crimes, terreur, répression'' by Éditions Robert Laffont. In the United States, it was published by Harvard University Press, with a foreword by Martin Malia. The German edition, published by Piper Verlag, includes a chapter written by Joachim Gauck. Laurent Courtois (born 11 September 1978) is a French former professional footballer who is currently the head coach of Columbus Crew 2, the MLS Next Pro reserve team of Major League Soccer's Columbus Crew. Club career Laurent Courtois began his career in the youth ranks of top French club Olympique Lyonnais. In the 1998–99 season he moved to AC Ajaccio in Ligue 2, where he gained his first experience. After a fine season with Ajaccio he transferred to Toulouse, where he helped the club gain promotion to Ligue 1. After a successful second season with Toulouse he was transferred to West Ham United in England. Alain Courtois (born 12 June 1951) is a Belgian politician. Born in Schaerbeek, he is Secretary General of the Belgian Football Association (URBSFA). He has served as a replacement minister on several occasions. He was the federally appointed Reformist Movement—Citizens' Movement for Change representative of the Brussels-Halle-Vilvoorde district from 26 June 2003 to 12 February 2004, replacing Daniel Ducarme, who became Minister-President of the Brussels-Capital Region and minister of Arts, Letters and Audio-visual of the French Community of Belgium. From 19 February 2004 to 28 June 2004 he served as a replacement for Jacques Simonet, who replaced Ducarme in the Minister-President post following a scandal. Edmond Jacques Courtois, (4 July 1920 – 3 July 1996) was a Canadian lawyer and public official. Courtois was appointed chair of the Security Intelligence Review Committee on December 23, 1992, the third person ever to chair the body responsible for oversight of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service. Courtois was born in Montreal. During World War II, he served with the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve and called to the Quebec bar in 1946. He practised law with the firm of MacDougall, MacFarlane, Scott & Hugessen, which later became Courtois, Clarkson, Parsons & Tétreault, until 1982. Following his retirement from his law firm, he served on several board including as chair of the educational publishers McGraw-Hill Ryerson. He was also president of CIIT Inc, vice-president of the Bank of Nova Scotia and also of the Canadian Life Assurance Company as well as on several other boards of directors. Edme-Bonaventure Courtois (born 15 July 1754 in Troyes, France - died on 6 December 1816 in Brussels) was a deputy of the National Convention. He found the will of Marie-Antoinette in the collection of papers of Robespierre hidden under his bed. Life Courtois was the son of a baker. He met Danton at the College of Juilly, where he finished his brilliant studies. He was a manufacturer of sabots at Arcis-sur-Aube. In 1787 his wife died. He was elected to the Legislative as deputy of the Aube and to the National Convention and supported the Montagnards. In 1791 he helped Danton to hide. Courtois, who compared Robespierre with Catiline, was involved in the coup that led to the fall of Robespierre, together with Laurent Lecointre, the instigator.
