County Of Mons
Mons (; German and nl, Bergen, ; Walloon and pcd, Mont) is a city and municipality of Wallonia, and the capital of the province of Hainaut, Belgium. Mons was made into a fortified city by Count Baldwin IV of Hainaut in the 12th century. The population grew quickly, trade flourished, and several commercial buildings were erected near the ''Grand’Place''. In 1814, King William I of the Netherlands increased the fortifications, following the fall of the First French Empire. The Industrial Revolution and coal mining made Mons a centre of heavy industry. In 1830, Belgium gained its independence and the decision was made to dismantle the fortifications, allowing the creation of large boulevards and other urban projects. On 2324 August 1914, Mons was the location of the Battle of Mons. The Arrondissement of Mons (french: Arrondissement de Mons; nl, Arrondissement Bergen) is one of the seven administrative arrondissements in the Walloon province of Hainaut, Belgium. It is both an administrative and a judicial arrondissement. However, the Judicial Arrondissement of Mons also comprises all municipalities of the Arrondissement of Soignies but one (Lessines), as well as the municipalities of Brugelette en Chièvres of the Arrondissement of Ath. Havré ( wa, Avrè) is a village of Wallonia and a district of the municipality of Mons, located in the province of Hainaut, Belgium. Cuesmes (; wa, Cweme) is a village of Wallonia and a district of the municipality of Mons, located in the province of Hainaut, Belgium. The famous artist, Vincent van Gogh, lived here during the years of 1879- 1880, at Maison Van Gogh (now a museum). Because Van Gogh used to live in Cuesmes, many people who live there now are fans of Van Gogh and his art. History Cuesmes was and originally is a coal mining village, as many of the residents who live there are descendants of coal miners from the 19th and 18th centuries. Coal mining is such a big part of Cuesmes and its culture that the village is surrounded in 'Slag Heaps', the most famous being Mount Héribus.
