Countess Palatine Elisabeth Auguste Of Sulzbach
Elisabeth Auguste of Sulzbach (Elisabeth Auguste; 17 January 1721 – 17 August 1794) was the eldest granddaughter of the Elector of the Palatinate Charles III Philip, and by her marriage to Elector Palatine Charles IV Theodore, Electress Palatine and later Electress of Bavaria. Biography Elisabeth Auguste's parents were Joseph Charles of Sulzbach (1694–1729) and Elisabeth Auguste of Neuburg (1693–1728), the latter the daughter of Elector Charles III Philip. On 17 January 1742, she married her cousin Charles Theodore of Sulzbach, who became Elector of the Palatinate in 1742 and Elector of Bavaria in 1777. The marriage was arranged to avoid a potential inheritance dispute within the different family branches. While Charles Theodore was described as learned and interested in the enlightenment, Elisabeth Augusta was described as vivacious, pleasure loving, uneducated and shallow. There have been three kinds of Bavarian consorts in history: duchesses, electresses and queens. Most consorts listed are duchesses. The first ever consort of Bavaria was Waldrada in the 6th century. The final consort was Maria Theresa of Austria-Este (1849–1919), Maria Theresia of Austria-Este in 1913. The longest serving house was the Wittelsbach dynasty, who played a major role in Bavarian history. During the medieval period under the Wittelsbach dynasty, Bavaria was split into two parts, Upper and Lower Bavaria. This meant that there may have been more than one Duchess of Bavaria at the same time, due to messy inheritance among heirs. Three of the break-away Wittelsbach families were: Landshut, Munich and Ingolstadt. Since 555 there have been 99 Bavarian consorts: 78 duchesses, 11 queens, 10 electresses and one margravine. Augustus (; 2 October 1582 – 14 August 1632) was Count Palatine of Sulzbach from 1614 until 1632. Life Augustus was born in Neuburg in 1582 as the second son of Philip Louis of Palatinate-Neuburg and Anna of Cleves. After his father's death in 1614 his territories were partitioned between Augustus and his two brothers - Augustus received northern portions of the Duchy of Neuburg which were constituted as the Duchy of Sulzbach. Augustus died in Windsheim in 1632 and was buried in Lauingen. He was a nephew of Countess Palatine Barbara of Zweibrücken-Neuburg. Philip William of Neuburg, Elector Palatine () (24 November 1615 – 2 September 1690) was Count Palatine of Neuburg from 1653 to 1690, Duchy of Jülich, Duke of Jülich and Berg (German region), Berg from 1653 to 1679 and Electorate of the Palatinate, Elector of the Palatinate from 1685 to 1690. Christian Augustus (German: Christian August) (26 July 1622 – 23 April 1708) was the Count Palatine of Sulzbach from 1632 until 1708. Life Christian Augustus was born in Sulzbach in 1622 as the eldest son of Augustus, Count Palatine of Sulzbach and Hedwig of Holstein-Gottorp. He succeeded his father in August 1632, at the age of 10. Christian Augustus was a tolerant ruler. He granted his citizens the right to choose their Christian denomination and introduced the Simultaneum, whereby churches had both Protestant and Catholic services. In 1666 he permitted Jews to settle in the Duchy of Sulzbach and, due to his interest in mysticism and the Kabbalah, allowed a Hebrew print-shop. Princess Ludwika Karolina Radziwiłł (; 27 February 1667 – 25 March 1695) was a magnate Princess of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth and an active reformer. Life Ludwika Karolina Radziwiłł was born in Königsberg in the Duchy of Prussia. A member of the Radziwiłł family, she was the last agnatic-line member of the most prominent Calvinists of Lithuania, and a descendant of the Gediminids and Jagiellons.
