Southern is the brand name used by the Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) train operating company on the Southern routes of the Thameslink, Southern and Great Northern franchise in England. Cane Hill
Cane Hill Hospital was a psychiatric hospital in Coulsdon in the London Borough of Croydon. The site is owned by GLA Land and Property. History The hospital has its origins as the third Surrey County Pauper Lunatic Asylum, designed by Charles Henry Howell and built in two stages between 1882 and 1888. The design which involved a 'radiating pavilion' layout was original. The hospital was taken over by London County Council in 1889. The hospital took in a large number of discharged mentally ill servicemen during the First World War, the earliest patient recorded being admitted in 1915 but later discharged to another hospital in 1923. Records for nearly 40 such service patients – some of whom died and were interred in the hospital cemetery – have been found. It was renamed the Cane Hill Mental Hospital in 1930. Coulsdon Town Railway Station
Coulsdon Town railway station serves the northern part of Coulsdon, in the London Borough of Croydon. It is on the Tattenham Corner line from and opened on 1 January 1904. Until 22 May 2011 it was called Smitham. History The station was opened as ''Smitham'' on 1 January 1904, and was briefly closed (between 1 January 1917 and 1 January 1919) during the First World War. It lies on a sharp curve, where the line swings away westwards from the Brighton Main Line. It is immediately adjacent to the closed Coulsdon North station on the main line, whose passenger traffic was diverted here when the latter closed on 3 October 1983. Coulsdon North is a closed railway station that served Coulsdon, Croydon, England, on the Brighton Main Line. Stoat's Nest The first station in Coulsdon was opened by the London and Brighton Railway on 12 July 1841, named after a nearby settlement. It stood approximately at the junction of present-day Windermere Road and Stoat's Nest Road. Nothing remains of this station today. It was one mile south of Godstone Road station (later called Caterham Junction and then Purley), and was the first station to serve Epsom Downs Racecourse, some eight miles (13 km) distant. It was in service until December 1856, when Godstone Road station reopened and the L&BR successor, the London Brighton and South Coast Railway (LB&SCR) had its own route from Croydon to Epsom.
