Costa De Cantabria
Costa de Cantabria is a Spanish geographical indication for '' vino de la tierra'' wines located in the autonomous region of Cantabria, on the north coast of Spain. ''Vino de la tierra'' is one step below the mainstream '' denominación de origen'' indication on the Spanish wine quality ladder. The area covered by this geographical indication comprises the municipalities in Cantabria located between the Atlantic or Cantabrian Sea coast and the Picos de Europa mountain range. It specifically excludes the municipalities already covered by the Liébana ''vino de la tierra'' geographic indication. The vineyards are located mainly in the municipalities of Valle de Villaverde, Vidular, Bárcena de Cicero and Esles. It acquired its ''vino de la tierra'' status in 2005. Cantabria (, also , , Cantabrian: ) is an autonomous community in northern Spain with Santander as its capital city. It is called a ''comunidad histórica'', a historic community, in its current Statute of Autonomy. It is bordered on the east by the Basque autonomous community (province of Biscay), on the south by Castile and León ( provinces of León, Palencia and Burgos), on the west by the Principality of Asturias, and on the north by the Cantabrian Sea (Bay of Biscay). Verdejo Negro
Verdejo is a variety of wine grape that has long been grown in the Rueda region of Spain. The grape originated in North Africa, and was spread to Rueda in about the 11th Century, possibly by Mozarabs. Verdejo was generally used to make a strongly oxidized, Sherry-like wine. In the Mid-20th Century, Verdejo almost became extinct, had it not been for the local winegrower Ángel Rodríguez Vidal (Bodega Martinsancho), who opted for this variety and contributed to re-establishing its prominence in the region. Picapoll Blanco
Piquepoul, Picpoul, or Picapoll is a variety of wine grape grown primarily in the Rhone Valley and Languedoc regions of France as well as Catalonia, Spain. It exists both in dark-skinned (Piquepoul noir) and light-skinned (Piquepoul blanc) versions, as well as a very little grown Piquepoul gris. Godello
Godello is a white variety of wine grape grown in northwestern Spain, in particular in Galicia. The Gouveio found in northern Portugal is thought to be the same grape variety. The origins of Godello variety are located in the town of Godella (Valencia) where this variety was first planted back in the 19th century by a local landowner in their plantation of Campo Olivar by the Baron of this township. In the early 1920s the vineyards were transported by a Galician trader who took several samples up to Galicia. Godello can produce fine white wines, and yields the best results in Valdeorras, where plantations have increased after having previously been in decline.
