Constituent Assembly Of Costa Rica
Costa Rica’s National Constituent Assembly was formed after the 1948 civil war. Elections to the Assembly for a New Constitution were called on December 8, 1948 by the then de facto Junta provisional government presided by José Figueres. The Assembly took place between January 15 and November 7, 1949. The Assembly successfully drafted and approved the current Costa Rican Constitution. Women were not allow to vote or be elected for any of the 45 seats, as women's voting was still not legal (the 1949 Constitution subsequently gave women the right to vote and be elected). Also, due to the recent civil war, the parties of the losing side, mainly the Republicans ( Calderonistas) and the Communists were outlawed. National Union Party (Costa Rica)
The National Union Party ( es, Partido Unión Nacional) is the name of several parties in Costa Rica, generally located on the centre-right of the political spectrum. The first party using that name was led by Ascensión Esquivel Ibarra as leader and candidate for the 1901 and 1913 elections. Ibarra was liberal as most of the Costa Rican political elite at the time. The party also took part in the 1915 parliamentary election. Carlos Durán Cartín was also candidate for the party in latter elections. Liberal journalist Otilio Ulate Blanco took control of the party and was part of an oppositional alliance of parties against Republican candidate Rafael Angel Calderón Guardia in 1948 allegedly winning the election. The Constitution of Costa Rica is the supreme law of Costa Rica. At the end of the 1948 Costa Rican Civil War, José Figueres Ferrer oversaw the Constituent Assembly of Costa Rica, Costa Rican Constitutional Assembly, which drafted the document. The name Constitutional was used for several loosely connected Costa Rican parties throughout history. The first was the Constitutional Convention Party (''Partido Convención Constitucional''), also the first ever Costa Rican political party. It was formed in 1868 to oppose the presidential candidacy of Julián Volio Llorente, but disbanded soon after.
