Cossack is a suburb of the town of Katherine, Northern Territory, Australia. It is within the Katherine Town Council local government area. The area was officially defined as a suburb in April 2007, adopting the name from white émigré farmers who settled in the area. The locality consists mostly of rural land holdings mixed with some smaller farms and residences, however there is also a small industrial area and power station close to the Stuart Highway. Katherine is a town in the Northern Territory of Australia. It is situated on the Katherine River, after which it is named, southeast of Darwin. It is the fourth largest settlement in the Territory and is known as the place where "The outback meets the tropics". Katherine had an urban population of approximately 6,300 at the 2016 Census. Katherine is also the closest major town to RAAF Base Tindal, located southeast, and provides education, health, local government services and employment opportunities for the families of Defence personnel stationed there. The Katherine Town Council is a local government area in the Northern Territory, established on 3 March 1978. It is situated south of Darwin, and covers an area of . The Town of Katherine is an established residential township with a commercial area and rural areas on the outskirts of the town. The original inhabitants of the town were the Dagoman and Jawoyn Aboriginal people. European settlement of the area dates from 1871, following the construction of the Overland Telegraph Line. Growth of the town began to start from 1926, following the opening of the railway line. The township grew around the railway line. Katherine is an electoral division of the Legislative Assembly in Australia's Northern Territory. The electorate was first created in 1987, replacing the abolished Elsey seat, and derives its name from the Katherine River. The Division of Lingiari is an Australian electoral division in the Northern Territory that covers the entirety of the territory outside of the Division of Solomon, which covers Darwin and surrounding areas. The division also includes the Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands. Lingiari includes all of the Northern Territory's remote Indigenous communities, most of whom vote when visited by mobile polling teams during the election campaign. Katherine Power Station
Katherine Power Station is a natural gas-fired power station in the Northern Territory of Australia located at Cossack near the town of Katherine. The power station is owned and operated by Territory Generation and supplies the Darwin-Katherine Interconnected System. The dual-fuel station can also independently provide power to Katherine in the event of disruptions across the regional grid, such as when gas supply was interrupted to Channel Island Power Station near Darwin during 2014. The generators in Katherine were able to use a back up supply of diesel fuel to minimise blackouts in the town. The power station was commissioned in 1987 with three generators providing a total capacity of 24.5 MW. A fourth unit was added in 2012, increasing this to 36.5 MW. 2021 Australian Census
The 2021 Australian census, simply called the 2021 Census, was the eighteenth national Census of Population and Housing in Australia.
