Anthomedusae
Anthoathecata, or the athecate hydroids, are an order of hydrozoans belonging to the phylum Cnidaria. A profusion of alternate scientific names exists for this long-known, heavily discussed, and spectacular group. It has also been called Gymnoblastea and (with or without an emended ending ''-ae''), Anthomedusa, Athecata, Hydromedusa, and Stylasterina. There are about 1,200 species worldwide.Schuchert, P. (2014). Anthoathecata. Accessed through: Schuchert, P. (2014) World Hydrozoa database at http://www.marinespecies.org/hydrozoa/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=13551 on 2014-10-31 These hydrozoans always have a polyp stage. Their hydranths grow either solitary or in colonies. There is no firm perisarc around the polyp body. The medusae, or jellyfish, are solitary animals, with tentacles arising from the bell margin, lacking statocysts but possessing radial canals. Their gonads are on the manubrium ("handle").Bouillon, J.; Gravili, C.; Pagès, F.; Gili, J.-M.; Boero, F. (2006). An intro ...

Polyorchis
''Polyorchis'', or bell jellies, is a genus of hydrozoans in the family Corynidae. They are transparent with red coloration in their internal organs and eye spots around the rim of their bell. The red pigmentation helps them camouflage. They are often found in harbors, marinas, and other calm waters close to shore. They feed on plankton and benthic crustaceans and are found near the sea floor. The bells can reach about 2.25 inches (5 cm). '' P. pencillatus'' is nicknamed "red-eyed jellyfish". At the base of the tentacles are several eyes, called ocelli, which contain light-sensing cells and red pigment A pigment is a colored material that is completely or nearly insoluble in water. In contrast, dyes are typically soluble, at least at some stage in their use. Generally dyes are often organic compounds whereas pigments are often inorganic compo ...s. Capitata
Capitata is a suborder of Hydrozoa, a class of marine invertebrates belonging to the phylum Cnidaria. Characteristics Members of this suborder are characterised by the tentacles of the polyps terminating in knobs. In some species these are only present in juvenile forms being replaced in adults by more threadlike tentacles. A high nematocyst concentration is present in the knobs. A few species in this group are better known as their solitary medusa form than as their polyp form. These include ''Sarsia'', '' Polyorchis'' and '' Cladonema''. Families According to the World Register of Marine Species, the following families are found in this suborder : * Asyncorynidae Kramp, 1949 * Cladocorynidae Allman, 1872 * Cladonematidae Gegenbaur, 1857 * Corynidae Johnston, 1836 * Halimedusidae Arai & Brinckmann-Voss, 1980 * Hydrocorynidae Rees, 1957 *Milleporidae Fleming, 1828 * Moerisiidae Poche, 1914 * Pennariidae McCrady, 1859 *Porpitidae Goldfuss, 1818 * Pseudosolanderiidae Bouillo ...

George Johnston (naturalist)
George Johnston (1797 – 1855) was a Scottish physician and naturalist. Johnston was one of the founders of the Berwickshire Naturalists' Club and became its first president. His books include ''The Flora of Berwick-upon-Tweed'', ''History of British Zoophytes'', and ''History of British Sponges and Lithophytes''. Life He was born at Simprin, Berwickshire, on 20 July 1797. When he was still young, his family moved to Ilderton in Northumberland. Johnston was educated first at Kelso, then at Berwick grammar school, and finally at the University of Edinburgh. He was apprenticed to John Abercrombie, and in 1817, qualifying as a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, he went to London. Contains obituary of Johnston and a list of publications. In 1818 Johnston began practice at Berwick-on-Tweed, where he remained. On 23 November 1819 he married Catharine Charles. Catharine illustrated many of his publications. Also in 1819 he graduated M.D. of Edinburgh, and in ...
