Correspondents Report (Australian Radio Program)
''Correspondents Report'' was a weekend news and current affairs program broadcast on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's Radio National and ABC Local Radio networks, from at least 1974 until 2019. History ''Correspondents Report'' has been running since at least 1974. Freelance reporter Roger East was covering the Indonesian insurgence in 1975, and was first to file the story of the killing of the Balibo Five in October. He was the sole remaining foreign journalist in Portuguese Timor at the time, He filed his last report for ''Correspondents Report'' on afternoon of 7 December 1975 before he was executed by Indonesian soldiers the following day. The last available episode of ''Correspondents Report'' is dated 10 February 2019, presented by Thomas Oriti. After this date, the program appears to have been incorporated into ''Sunday Extra'', hosted by Julian Morrow. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) is the national broadcaster of Australia. It is principally funded by direct grants from the Australian Government and is administered by a government-appointed board. Roger East (journalist)
Roger East (7 February 19228 December 1975) was an Australian journalist who was murdered by the Indonesian military during its invasion of East Timor in 1975. East was a freelance journalist who worked for the Australian Associated Press (AAP). He travelled to Portuguese Timor (now known as East Timor) in October 1975, following the story of the Balibo Five, who had been killed by Indonesian soldiers just weeks before. East was captured by the Indonesian armed forces and was brought, along with many other prisoners, to the Dili waterfront where he and scores of others were then executed by firing squad. The Indonesian invasion of East Timor, known in Indonesia as Operation Lotus ( id, Operasi Seroja), began on 7 December 1975 when the Indonesian National Armed Forces, Indonesian military (ABRI/TNI) invaded East Timor under the pretext of anti-colonialism and anti-communism to overthrow the Fretilin regime Carnation Revolution, that had emerged in 1974. Balibo Five
The Balibo Five was a group of journalists for Australian commercial television networks who were murdered in the period leading up to the Indonesian invasion of East Timor. The Balibo Five were based in the town of Balibo in East Timor (then Portuguese Timor), where they were killed on 16 October 1975 during Indonesian incursions before the invasion. Roger East travelled to Balibo soon after to investigate the likely deaths of the Five and was later executed by members of the Indonesian military on the docks of Dili. In 2007, an Australian coroner ruled that they had been deliberately killed by Indonesian special forces soldiers. The official Indonesian version is that the men were killed by cross-fire during the battle for the town.
