Cornelius O'Brien (bishop)
Cornelius O'Brien (4 May 1843 – 9 March 1906) was a Canadian Roman Catholic priest, archbishop, and author of 39 books. Life Born in New Glasgow, Prince Edward Island, the son of Terence O'Brien and Catherine O'Driscoll, O'Brien graduated from Urban College and in 1871 was ordained a priest. In 1882, he was appointed Archbishop of Halifax, Nova Scotia. He followed Michael Hannan in this position. He established a Catholic high school (1888) and Holy Heart Seminary (1896), both in Halifax and helped to found the French-language Collège Sainte Anne (1890) in Pointe-de-l'Église, Nova Scotia. In 1894 he delivered a eulogy for the Rt. Hon. Sir John Thompson, a former Premier of Nova Scotia and the first Catholic Prime Minister of Canada. From 1896 to 1897, he was president of the Royal Society of Canada. He died in Halifax on 9 March 1906. Félix-Gabriel Marchand (January 9, 1832 – September 25, 1900) was a journalist, author, notary and politician in Quebec, Canada. He was the 11th premier of Quebec from May 24, 1897, to September 25, 1900. Born in what is Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec today, he was the son of Lt.-Colonel Gabriel Marchand (1780–1852) J.P., and Mary MacNider, a woman of the Anglican faith, daughter of John MacNider, 2nd Seigneur of Metis, Quebec. As a child, Marchand attended English schools and was taught in French at the age of 11. Fluently bilingual, Marchand became a journalist and writer. He became a notary and practised this profession for 45 years, but continued journalism and writing as well. Alfred Richard Cecil Selwyn, CMG, LL.D, FRS, FGS (26 July 182419 October 1902) was a British geologist and public servant, director of the Geological Survey of Victoria from 1852 to 1869, director of the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) from 1869 to 1894, and President of the Royal Society of Canada from 1895 to 1896. Holy Cross Cemetery is a cemetery in Halifax, Nova Scotia, owned and operated by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth. It was constructed in 1843 under the direction of Archbishop William Walsh, on land provided by local authorities. Holy Cross Cemetery replaced the first Catholic cemetery in Halifax, the St. Peter's Cemetery located next to St. Mary's Basilica on Spring Garden Road.
