Corleone (film)
''Father of the Godfathers'' ( it, Corleone) is a 1978 Italian crime film directed by Pasquale Squitieri. It stars Claudia Cardinale, Giuliano Gemma and Tony Kendall and is set in Sicily in the 1950s. Gemma was awarded 1979 Best Actor at the Montréal World Film Festival for his role. Cast Production ''Father of the Godfathers'' was inspired by Orazio Barrese's book ''I complici, Gli anni dell'antimafia''. The book was the story of the Mafia boss Luciano Liggio. After the release of Squitieri's previous film '' I Am the Law'', Mario Cecchi Gori approached him to make an adaptation. Barrese and Squitieri were friends, but later stated that "I don't consider ''Father of the Godfathers'' as one of my best works, it's definitely inferior to ''I Am the Law''." Pasquale Squitieri
Pasquale Squitieri (27 November 1938 – 18 February 2017) was an Italian film director and screenwriter. Life and career Born in Naples, Squitieri graduated in law, then was briefly involved in stage, as author ("''La battaglia''") and even actor (directed by Francesco Rosi). He made his film debut with ''Io e Dio'', produced by Vittorio De Sica, and, after two Spaghetti Westerns he signed as William Redford, he focused on drama films centered on political and social issues. His film ''Il prefetto di ferro'' won the David di Donatello for David di Donatello for Best Film, Best Film in 1978. ''Li chiamarono... briganti!'', a film about the brigand Carmine Crocco, was suspended from the cinemas and it is not available on the home video market. Luciano Liggio
Luciano Leggio (; 6 January 1925 – 15 November 1993) was an Italian criminal and leading figure of the Sicilian Mafia. He was the head of the Corleonesi, the Mafia faction that originated in the town of Corleone. He is universally known with the surname Liggio, a result of a misspelling in court documents in the 1960s. As well as setting the Corleonesi on track to become the dominant Mafia clan in Sicily, he became infamous for avoiding convictions for a multitude of crimes, including homicide, before he was finally imprisoned for life in 1974. Early life Leggio was one of ten children raised in extreme poverty on a small farm. He turned to crime in his teens, and received his first conviction at the age of 18 for stealing corn. Orazio Orlando (14 June 1933 – 18 December 1990) was an Italian film, stage and television actor. Life and career Born in Naples, Orlando attended the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Rome for two seasons, in 1953-54 and in 1954-55, without graduating.
