Coptic Orthodox Church In North America
The Copts began to immigrate to the United States as early as the late 1940s. Immigration to Canada was soon to follow, and in general, this was to be the case throughout North America in the coming decades. With hundreds of Coptic Orthodox churches in the United States alone (along with over 90 congregations in Canada), it is estimated that there are over one million Coptic Orthodox Christians in North America. While the Coptic Orthodox form a larger number in the US, the first Coptic Orthodox parish in North America was actually founded in Canada. In 1964St. Mark's Coptic Orthodox Churchin Toronto, Canada was established. However, not too long afterwards, the first parish in the States, St. Mark's Coptic Orthodox Church (Jersey City) was founded in the late 1960s and it is considered the first Coptic Orthodox Church, parish, and church building in North America, if not, the Western Hemisphere. Copts ( cop, ⲛⲓⲣⲉⲙⲛ̀ⲭⲏⲙⲓ ; ar, الْقِبْط ) are a Christians, Christian ethnoreligious group indigenous to North Africa who have primarily inhabited the area of modern Egypt and Sudan since Ancient history, antiquity. Most ethnic Copts are Coptic Orthodox Church, Coptic Oriental Orthodox Christians. The Pope of the Coptic Orthodox Church ( cop, Ⲡⲁⲡⲁ, translit=Papa; ar, البابا, translit=al-Bābā), also known as the Bishop of Alexandria, is the leader of the Coptic Orthodox Church, with ancient Christian roots in Egypt. Bishop Karas
Bishop Karas (born Sorial Ayad Sorial) was the first bishop of the Coptic Orthodox Church in the United States and the first abbot of the church's first monastery outside Egypt. Early life Sorial Ayad Sorial was born on 17 January 1955, in Sudan. Sorial was devout at a young age, and received a strong Orthodox upbringing. After Sorial finished his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Khartoum, he left to France to pursue a doctorate at the University of Toulouse. Career On 18 January 1981, he attempted to enter Monastery of Saint Bishoy but was stopped by the Abbot, Bishop Sarabamoun, who told him to return to France to continue his education. Bishop Kyrillos (Arabic نيافة الأنبا كيرلس ) (formerly Fr. John Paul Abdelsayed) is the first American-born bishop of the Coptic Orthodox Church. He previously led the Diocese of Melbourne and affiliated regions in Australia from 1999 to 2018, and first served as a bishop in New Jersey, United States, in the Archdiocese of North America.
