Convoy (1927 Film)
''Convoy'' is a lost 1927 American silent World War I drama starring Lowell Sherman and Dorothy Mackaill and released through First National Pictures. The film is an early producing credit for the Halperin Brothers, Victor and Edward, later of '' White Zombie'' fame, and is the final screen appearance of Broadway stars Gail Kane and Vincent Serrano. The Alfred Hitchcock film '' Notorious'' (1946) was based on the same story, originally published in ''The Saturday Evening Post''. Background ''The Song of the Dragon'', is a story by John Taintor Foote, which appeared as a two-part serial in ''The Saturday Evening Post'' in November 1921. Lothar Mendes (19 May 1894 – 24 February 1974) was a German-born screenwriter and film director. His two best known films are ''Jew Süss (1934 film), Jew Süss'' (1934) and ''The Man Who Could Work Miracles'' (1936), both productions for British studios. Career Born in Berlin, Mendes began his career as an actor in Vienna and Berlin in Max Reinhardt's company. After directing his first two films in Berlin, he settled in the United States in the early 1920s and remained there until 1933, directing more than a dozen features, mostly frothy comedies, while under contract to Paramount Pictures, Paramount. Vincent Serrano (February 17, 1866 – January 11, 1935) was an American actor in plays and silent films. Biography Serrano's best-known role was as Lieutenant Denton in the Augustus Thomas play ''Arizona'', which had its New York opening in September 1900. He acted the role in over 1,000 performances. He also appeared in 13 movies, the last of which was 1927's ''Convoy''. Eddie Gribbon (January 3, 1890 – September 29, 1965) was an American film actor. He appeared in more than 180 films from the 1910s to the 1950s. Donald Reed (born Ernesto Avila Guillen; July 23, 1901 – February 28, 1973) was a Mexican film actor, and later, Beverly Hills video consultant. He appeared in more than 40 films between 1925 and 1940. Biography Reed was born in Mexico City as Ernesto Avila Guillen, the son of Alberto Guillen, a shoe merchant. His name was changed to Ernest Gillen when he signed with Universal. When he later signed with First National, his name was changed to Donald Reed. He married the beauty pageant winner Janet Eastman and the two had one daughter together, Joy. He was born in Mexico City, Mexico and died in Westwood, Los Angeles, California. Ian Keith (born Keith Ross; February 27, 1899 – March 26, 1960) was an American actor. Early years Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Keith grew up in Chicago. He was educated at the Francis Parker School there and played Hamlet in a school production at age 16. Lawrence Gray
Lawrence Gray (July 28, 1898 – February 2, 1970) was an American actor of the 1920s and 1930s. Biography Born in San Francisco in 1898, Gray served during World War I in the U. S. Navy and gained a commission. After the war he began in the technical side of films at the Lasky Studios, but later became an extra in crowd scenes and such, and liking the work, decided on a film career. He appeared in over 40 films between 1925 and 1936, although many were B movies. In 1930, he starred in the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film musical ''Children of Pleasure'', alongside Wynne Gibson, and was also involved with the film score. That same year he also starred in the Vitaphone film musicals '' Sunny'' and ''Spring is Here''. He spent much of his career in vaudeville. He died on February 2, 1970, aged 71, in 1970 in Mexico City.
