Continuum (chamber Ensemble)
Continuum (founded 1966) is an American classical chamber music ensemble specializing in contemporary classical music. Biography and career Founded in New York City in 1966 by pianists Cheryl Seltzer and Joel Sachs, Continuum is a chamber music ensemble that focuses on performing and recording classical music by composers from the 20th and 21st centuries. Performing in their native New York City, and around the world, Continuum aims "to expand the audience for recent music," and performs and records both well-known contemporary composers as well as many lesser-known composers. Initially performing works by composers such as Bartók, Stravinsky, Ravel, and Debussy, Continuum branched out to feature works by Cowell, Ives, Seeger, Thomson, and many others. Continuum often performs "retrospective concerts," which focus on a range of works by a single composer. Capstone Records
Capstone Records is an American classical music record label focusing particularly on contemporary classical music. It was established by Richard Brooks in 1986 and was based in Brooklyn, New York. The label has hundreds of releases featuring a wide range of composers from William Albright, Milton Babbitt, Robert Baksa, and John Cage to Mary Jeanne van Appledorn, Rodney Waschka II, Iannis Xenakis, and Chen Yi. Performers represented on the label include such groups as the California EAR Unit, the Nevsky String Quartet, Steven Graff, and the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra. In 2009, the company was acquired by Parma Recordings of Hampton, New Hampshire. In the spring of 2009 it was announced Capstone would be run as an imprint. Conlon Nancarrow
Samuel Conlon Nancarrow (; October 27, 1912 – August 10, 1997) was an American-Mexican composer who lived and worked in Mexico for most of his life. Nancarrow is best remembered for his ''Studies for Player Piano'', being one of the first composers to use auto-playing musical instruments, realizing their potential to play far beyond human performance ability. He lived most of his life in relative isolation and did not become widely known until the 1980s. Biography Early years Nancarrow was born in Texarkana, Arkansas. He played trumpet in a jazz band in his youth before studying music first in Cincinnati, Ohio, and later in Boston, Massachusetts, with Roger Sessions, Walter Piston and Nicolas Slonimsky. He met Arnold Schoenberg during that composer's brief stay in Boston in 1933. In Boston, Nancarrow joined the Communist Party. Virko Baley
Viroslav Petrovych Baley (born October 21, 1938, known by the diminutive Virko) is a Ukrainian- American composer, conductor, and pianist. He was born in Radekhiv in Poland (now in Ukraine), the only child of Petro (Peter) and Lydia Baley. Petro Baley was sent to Auschwitz concentration camp following the German invasion of Poland in 1939, and he and extended family were relocated to Slovakia. The family was reunited on a farm in Germany towards the end of the war to work as farm laborers, after which they relocated to Munich. From 1947 to 1949, the family lived in a displaced person's camp in Regensburg, Germany. Baley began his formal music training in Germany. He studied at the Los Angeles Conservatory (renamed the California Institute of the Arts). MusicMasters was a record label that was based in Ocean Township, New Jersey. History MusicMasters was founded in the late 1970s by Albert Nissim and his sons Robert and Jeffrey, who owned the Musical Heritage Society, which had previously only licensed European recordings for sale via mail-order. MusicMasters produced recordings from 1981 until 1999, which were sold by mail-order and retail by the Music Heritage Society.
