The Continental Basketball Association Rookie of the Year was an annual award given to the best rookie(s) of the regular season of the CBA. The award was given to players on their first CBA season and with no prior professional experience. History The award was established in 1957, when the league was operating under the name ''Eastern Professional Basketball League''. The first winner was Dick Gaines, from Seton Hall. In 1970 the league changed its name, becoming the ''Eastern Basketball Association''. In 1975–76, for the first time in CBA history, the award was shared by two players: Mo Rivers (from NC State) and Walter Luckett (from Ohio). In 1977 a new award, the Newcomer of the Year, was created: while the Rookie of the Year was given to players on their first season with no experience in professional leagues, the Newcomer of the Year was given to players who already had professional experience. Continental Basketball Association MVP Award
The Continental Basketball Association (CBA) Player of the Year, formerly known as the Eastern Basketball Association (EBA) Most Valuable Player and the CBA Most Valuable Player, was an annual award given to the best player in the CBA. The winner was selected by a vote of the league's head coaches. Twenty-three of the winners have been guards, 30 have been forwards, and only four have been centers. There have been two players—Jack McCloskey and Vincent Askew—who were two time recipients of the award. The Scranton Miners/Apollos have had six players named the EBA Most Valuable Player. The league's name was changed from the Eastern Basketball Association to the Continental Basketball Association following the 1977–78 season. James Huggard (September 16, 1933 – October 16, 2020) was an American professional basketball player and coach. He played college basketball for the Villanova Wildcats and professionally in the Eastern Professional Basketball League. Playing career Huggard attended West Catholic Preparatory High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but did not play on the school basketball team due to his height of . After his graduation, he grew several inches and gained attention while playing in local Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) circles. Huggard earned numerous scholarships and committed to play for the Villanova Wildcats. He was a member of an undefeated Wildcats junior varsity team during the 1957–58 season. David C. Gunther (born July 22, 1937) is American former basketball player and coach. He served as the head basketball coach at the University of North Dakota from 1970 to 1988. Gunther played college basketball at the University of Iowa and professional basketball with the San Francisco Warriors of the National Basketball Association (NBA).
