Container Corporation Of America
Container Corporation of America (CCA) was founded in 1926 and manufactured corrugated boxes. In 1968 CCA merged with Montgomery Ward & Company, Inc., becoming MARCOR. MARCOR maintained separate management for the operations of each company, but had a joint board of directors. In 1986, Mobil Corporation, which had bought MARCOR in the early 1970s, sold the CCA company to the Jefferson Smurfit Corporation, which merged with the Stone Container Corporation in 1998 to become part of the Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation. Under the leadership of Walter Paepcke, CCA was a patron of graphic arts and design. The company amassed a collection of art works which eventually found their way to the National Museum of American Art. In the late 1940s, CCA commissioned Herbert Bayer to create a ''World Geo-Graphic Atlas'' which was distributed free to more than 150 colleges and universities. Corrugated box design is the process of matching design factors for corrugated fiberboard boxes with the functional physical, processing and end-use requirements. Packaging engineers work to meet the performance requirements of a box while controlling total costs throughout the system. Herbert Bayer
Herbert Bayer (April 5, 1900 – September 30, 1985) was an Austrian and American graphic designer, painter, photographer, sculptor, art director, environmental and interior designer, and architect. He was instrumental in the development of the Atlantic Richfield Company's corporate art collection until his death in 1985. Biography Training and Bauhaus years Bayer apprenticed under the artist Georg Schmidthammer in Linz. Leaving the workshop to study at the Darmstadt Artists' Colony, he became interested in Walter Gropius's Bauhaus manifesto. Descriptive Color Names Dictionary
The ''Descriptive Color Names Dictionary'' is a dictionary of color names used for mass-market clothing and consumer merchandise, such as those in mail order catalogs. It relates each color name to one or more color swatches in the ''Color Harmony Manual'', a color atlas based on the Ostwald color system. The book was edited by Helen Taylor, Lucille Knoche, and Walter Granville, and was published by the Container Corporation of America in 1950 and distributed free to owners of the ''Color Harmony Manual''. The editors decided to use the ''Color Harmony Manual'' and the Ostwald system as a basis for their dictionary because it is easy to relate to basic color names, includes the color gamut of most mass-market products, and has easily removable double-sided (one glossy, one matte) color chips. Neil Harris (historian)
Neil Harris (born 1938) is an American cultural historian. He is the Preston and Sterling Morton Professor of History and Art History Emeritus at the University of Chicago. Biography Harris received an A.B. from Columbia University in 1958 and studied at Clare College, Cambridge on a Kellett Fellowship, earning a second B.A. in 1960. He then obtained his doctorate from Harvard University in 1965. He wrote his dissertation under Oscar Handlin, which was published into the book ''The Artist in American Society: the Formative Years, 1790-1860'' (1966) that examined the view of art in American society. He taught at Harvard before joining the University of Chicago faculty in 1969.
