Conrad Ten Brink
Conrad Caesar ten Brink (31 January 1875 – 3 March 1938) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Early life Ten Brink was born in the Courthouse Hotel in Smythesdale, Victoria on 31 January 1875. His father, Conrad ten Brink Sr, was a German immigrant from Schleswig-Holstein, who came to Australia as a child in 1854. Conrad Ted Brink Sr promoted Sheffield Handicap running races into Victoria when he was based at Smythesdale, near Ballarat. The family moved to Albury, New South Wales when Ten Brink was young and his father twice served as the town's mayor, in 1898 and 1906. The Ten Brink family operated the Globe Hotel, Albury. Football career A follower, Ten Brink developed a high reputation during his time with the Albury Football Club and joined Essendon in 1898. Smythesdale
Smythesdale is a town in Victoria, Australia. The town is located on the Glenelg Highway. Most of the town is located in the Golden Plains Shire local government area; however, a small section lies in the Shire of Pyrenees. Smythesdale is west of Ballarat and west of the state capital, Melbourne. At the , Smythesdale and the surrounding area had a population of 1,032. Smythesdale Primary School is a part of the Woady Yaloak PS with Ross Creek, Scarsdale, and Snake Valley as the other campus'. The ''Wagga Wagga Express and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser'' was an English language newspaper published in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales. It was the first newspaper to be published in Wagga Wagga, and was in circulation from 1858 to 1939. History The newspaper was first published on 30 October 1858 by James Thorburn Brown, predating '' The Daily Advertiser'' by ten years. The paper changed name several times and ceased publication in 1939. The ''Wagga Wagga Express'' offices were destroyed by fire on 14 February 1892 with only the account books being rescued from the blaze. The Ovens and Murray Football Netball League (O&MFNL) is an Australian rules football and netball competition containing ten clubs based in north-eastern Victoria, Australia, Victoria, the southern Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia, New South Wales and the Ovens and Murray area. 1898 VFL Grand Final
The 1898 VFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the Essendon Football Club and Fitzroy Football Club, held in Melbourne on 24 September 1898. The match was played to determine the premiers for the 1898 VFL season. Fitzroy won the match by 15 points. The game was played under atrocious ground conditions, in front of 16,538 people, at the Junction Oval. The match is recognised as the first VFL grand final, although the term "grand final" was not in wide use until 1931. It was the first time that Victorian Football League premiership was decided in a final match, after the 1897 premiership was won under a different finals system by Essendon when they finished above three other clubs on the finals series ladder. Both the Fitzroy back-pocket Stan Reid and the Essendon full-forward Charlie Moore later died in South Africa in active service during the Anglo-Boer War; Moore on 5 May 1901 and Reid on 23 June 1901. The 1898 VFL season was the second season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured eight clubs, ran from 14 May until 24 September, and comprised a 14-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring all eight clubs. The premiership was won by the Fitzroy Football Club for the first time, after it defeated by 15 points in the inaugural 1898 VFL Grand Final. Benalla is a small city located on the Broken River gateway to the High Country north-eastern region of Victoria, Australia, about north east of the state capital Melbourne.
