Connecticut's At-large Congressional District Special Election, 1817
A special election was held in in 1817 to fill two vacancies in the 15th Congress, both of which had occurred before the start of that Congress. The vacancies were left by the death of members-elect Sylvanus Backus (F) on February 15, 1817, and Charles Dennison (F) who declined the seat. Election results As there were two vacancies in an at-large district, the top ''two'' candidates were elected to represent Connecticut. Huntington and Terry took their seats with the rest of the 15th Congress. 15th United States Congress
The 15th United States Congress was a meeting of the legislative branch of the United States federal government, consisting of the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives. It met in the Old Brick Capitol in Washington, D.C. from March 4, 1817, to March 4, 1819, during the first two years of James Monroe's presidency. The apportionment of seats in the House of Representatives was based on the Third Census of the United States in 1810. Both chambers had a Democratic-Republican majority. Ebenezer Huntington
Ebenezer Huntington (December 26, 1754 – June 17, 1834) was an officer in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, and afterwards United States Representative from Connecticut. Early life Ebenezer was born on December 26, 1754, in Norwich in the Connecticut Colony to Jabez and Hannah (Williams) Huntington. His brothers were Joshua (who also served during the Revolution) and Zachariah. His half brothers were Jedediah and Andrew, whose mother Elizabeth (Backus) Huntington died in 1746. The Backuses were a prominent family from the area whose heirs would found Backus Hospital. Ebenezer attended Yale College, leaving without permission on April 21, 1775. After communication with the college, he would receive his degree on August 8 of the same year. Nathaniel Terry
Nathaniel Terry Jr. (January 30, 1768 – June 14, 1844) was an American politician, lawyer, and judge who served a single term in the United States House of Representatives, representing the at-large congressional district of Connecticut from 1817 to 1819 as a member of the Federalist Party. He previously served in the Connecticut House of Representatives from 1804 to 1815, and subsequently served as the 4th mayor of Hartford, Connecticut from 1824 to 1831. Early life and education Terry was born in Enfield, Connecticut on January 30, 1768 to Nathaniel Terry Sr. and Abiah Dwight. He attended common schools and Dartmouth College. Terry graduated from Yale College in 1786. He studied law. Career Terry was admitted to the bar in 1790; he commenced practice in Enfield. Sylvester Gilbert
Sylvester Gilbert (October 20, 1755 – January 2, 1846) was a United States representative from Connecticut. He was born in Hebron, Connecticut. He pursued classical studies and was graduated from Dartmouth College in 1775. Later, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in November 1777, and commenced practice in Hebron. Gilbert was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives 1780–1812. He was also the Connecticut attorney for Tolland County, Connecticut 1786–1807. He was the chief judge of the county court and judge of the probate court 1807–1818 and a principal of a law school 1810–1818. Lyman Law
Lyman Law (August 19, 1770 – February 3, 1842), son of Richard Law and father of John Law, was a United States representative from Connecticut. He was born New London, Connecticut. He pursued classical studies and was graduated from Yale College in 1791. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1793 and commenced practice in New London. Law was a member of the Connecticut State House of Representatives in 1801, 1802, 1806, 1809, 1810, 1819, and 1826, and served as speaker in 1806, 1809, and 1810. He was elected as a Federalist to the Twelfth, Thirteenth, and Fourteenth Congresses (March 4, 1811 – March 3, 1817). Law was the sixth Grand Master of the Masonic Grand Lodge of Connecticut, serving from 1821 to 1822. Epaphroditus Champion (April 6, 1756 – December 22, 1834) was an American politician and military officer from Connecticut. He served as a U.S. Representative from Connecticut. Early life Champion was born in Colchester in the Connecticut Colony, son of Colonel Henry Champion and Deborah (Brainard) Champion. He was educated both by private tutors and in the common schools.
