Conn, The Shaughraun
''Conn, the Shaughraun'' is a 1912 Australian silent film directed by Gaston Mervale starring Louise Lovely based on a popular play by Dion Boucicault. It is considered a lost film. Plot Kinchela, an unscrupulous land agent, determines to get possession of the land belonging to Robert Ffolliott and his sister Claire, who are his charges. He causes Robert to be sentenced to penal servitude by swearing information falsely that he is a Fenian The word ''Fenian'' () served as an umbrella term for the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) and their affiliate in the United States, the Fenian Brotherhood, secret political organisations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries dedicated .... Robert escapes and returns home, and is again soon in the hands of Kinchela. But Conn, the shaughraun, intervenes, Robert is pardoned (as are all the Fenians), and Kinchela brought to justice. Gaston Mervale
Gaston Mervale (1882–1934) was an Australian director and actor who worked extensively on stage and in films. He directed several films for the Australian Life Biograph Company. After this wound up he went to New York and worked as an actor for several years. He returned to Australia in 1917 to produce plays. The Shaughraun
''The Shaughraun'' () is a melodramatic Play (theatre), play written by Irish people, Irish playwright Dion Boucicault. It was first performed at Wallack's Theatre, New York City, New York, on 14 November 1874. Dion Boucicault played Conn in the original production. The play was a huge success, making half a million dollars for Boucicault. Plot Robert Ffolliott, fiancé of Arte O'Neale, has returned to Ireland after escaping from transportation to Australia. He was in part sent as a result of Kinchela's desire for ownership of the O’Neale property. However, two things stand in Kinchela's way: a curse on the property that brings death to all inhabitants that are not a part of certain Irish gentry families (Arte O’Neale being from one of said families), and the engagement of Robert to Arte.
