Henri Estienne
Henri Estienne (; ; 1528 or 15311598), also known as Henricus Stephanus (), was a French printer and classical scholar. He was the eldest son of Robert Estienne. He was instructed in Latin, Greek, and Hebrew by his father and would eventually take over the Estienne printing firm which his father owned in 1559 when his father died. His most well-known work was the ''Thesaurus graecae linguae'', which was printed in five volumes. The basis of Greek lexicology, no thesaurus would rival that of Estienne's for three hundred years. Among his many publications of Greek authors, his publications of Plato are the source of Stephanus pagination, which is still used to refer to Plato's works. Estienne died in Lyon in 1598. Anatole Bailly
Anatole Bailly (; Orléans, 16 December 1833 – 12 December 1911, Orléans) was a French Hellenist, author of the famous '' Dictionnaire grec-français'' (Greek-French Dictionary), published in 1895. Biography Anatole Bailly was born at Orleans on 16 December 1833 to a family of moderate wealth - his father was a director of the auditing company ''L'Orléanaise'' and his mother ran a small store selling groceries, fruit and sewing supplies. He studied at a college in Orleans and obtained a bachelor of letters. He was then sent to Paris to prepare for entry into the École Normale Supérieure in a private institution, which he graduated from in 1853. Anatole Bailly began his career in education as a substitute at the lycée in Lyons. There he successfully achieved the agrégation de grammaire. Robert Beekes
Robert Stephen Paul Beekes (; 2 September 1937 – 21 September 2017) was a Dutch linguist who was emeritus professor of Comparative Indo-European Linguistics at Leiden University and an author of many monographs on the Proto-Indo-European language. Scholarly work One of his most well-known books is ''Comparative Indo-European Linguistics: An Introduction'', a standard handbook on Proto-Indo-European that treats the area of linguistic reconstruction thoroughly but also features cultural reconstruction and comparative linguistic methods in general. Beekes was also a co-author, with L. Bouke van der Meer, of ''De Etrusken spreken'' (1991). He advocated the Asia Minor theory to explain the Etruscans' origin. Pierre Chantraine
Pierre Louis Chantraine (; 15 September 1899 – 30 June 1974) was a French linguist. He was born in Lille and died in Paris. A student of, among others, Antoine Meillet, Joseph Vendryes and Paul Mazon, Chantraine became one of the most renowned authorities on Ancient Greek philology of his generation. After teaching at the University of Lyon between 1925 and 1928, he became ''Directeur d'études de philologie grecque'' ("Director of Greek Philology Studies") at the École pratique des hautes études in Paris, and also taught at the Sorbonne from 1938, continuing in both functions until his retirement in 1969. For the ''Collection des Universités de France'', he edited and translated Xenophon (''Oeconomicus'') and Arrian (''Indica''). The ''Cambridge Greek Lexicon'' is a dictionary of the Ancient Greek language published by Cambridge University Press in April 2021. First conceived in 1997 by the classicist John Chadwick, the lexicon was compiled by a team of researchers based in the Faculty of Classics in Cambridge consisting of the Hellenist James Diggle (Editor-in-Chief), Bruce Fraser, Patrick James, Oliver Simkin, Anne Thompson, and Simon Westripp. Abandoning the predominant historico-linguistic method, it begins each entry with the word's root meaning and proceeds to list further common usages. The dictionary is also notable for avoiding euphemism.
