Compagnie française du télégraphe de Paris à New-York (French Telegraph Company from Paris to New York) was a telegraph company founded in 1879 by Augustin Pouyer-Quertier, at the request of the French government. The previous company, the French Atlantic Cable Company, had laid a cable in 1869, but had effectively merged with the Anglo-American Telegraph Company in 1873.Daniel R. French Atlantic Cable Company
The French Atlantic Cable Company (Société du Cable Transatlantique Francaise Limited) was established in 1869 to install a transatlantic telegraph cable independent of British territories. The cable ran 2,584 miles from Brest to Saint Pierre Island off the coast of Newfoundland, then a second leg ran 749 miles to land at Duxbury, Massachusetts, near Boston. The company also installed a second cable from Salcombe, on the south west coast of England, to the coast of Brittany, thereby bypassing traffic around British-owned cables across the English Channel. The Atlantic Telegraph Company was a company formed on 6 November 1856 to undertake and exploit a commercial telegraph cable across the Atlantic ocean, the first such telecommunications link. History Cyrus Field, American businessman and financier, set his sights on laying the first transatlantic underwater telegraph cable after having been contacted by Frederic Newton Gisborne who attempted to connect St. Johns, Newfoundland to New York City, but failed due to lack of funding. After inquiring about the feasibility of a transatlantic underwater cable to Lieutenant Matthew Fontaine Maury of the U.S. Navy, Field formed an agreement with the Englishmen John Watkins Brett and Charles Tilston Bright to create the Atlantic Telegraph Company. Transatlantic Telegraph Cable
Transatlantic telegraph cables were undersea cables running under the Atlantic Ocean for telegraph communications. Telegraphy is now an obsolete form of communication, and the cables have long since been decommissioned, but telephone and data are still carried on other transatlantic telecommunications cables. The first cable was laid in the 1850s from Valentia Island off the west coast of Ireland to Bay of Bulls, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland. The first communications occurred on 16 August 1858, but the line speed was poor, and efforts to improve it caused the cable to fail after three weeks. The Atlantic Telegraph Company led by Cyrus West Field constructed the first transatlantic telegraph cable. The project began in 1854 and was completed in 1858.
