Como uma Onda (Zen-Surfismo) is a Brazilian pop song by Lulu Santos and recorded in 1983, written by Lulu Santos himself and by the journalist and writer Nelson Motta especially to the soundtrack of the movie '' Garota Dourada'', by Antônio Calmon. The song has been very much executed all over the country in the beginning of the 80s and it is still sung in the shows of the singer. Inspiration According to Nelson Motta, who considers the song a ''modern bolero'', the lyrics would be inspired in Jorge Luis Borges and the book ''Zen in the Art of Archery'', of the German philosopher Eugen Herrigel, and reflected the personal condition lived by Nelson with his zen philosophy at that time (when Motta himself was the owner of a notorious nightclub, ''Noites Cariocas'', placed in the mount Pão de Açúcar Sugarloaf Mountain ( pt, Pão de Açúcar, ) is a peak situated in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at the mouth of Guanabara Bay on a peninsula that juts out into the Atlantic Oc ... Lulu Santos
Lulu Santos, stage name of Luiz Maurício Pragana dos Santos (born May 4, 1953), is a Brazilian singer and guitarist. Career Lulu was born in Rio de Janeiro. Beginning in the progressive rock band Vímana, he left the band and embarked on a solo career that produced several hits, such as "Tesouros da Juventude" (a tribute to John Lennon, written with Nelson Motta), "De Repente Califórnia", "Tempos modernos", "Adivinha o quê", the smash hit "Como uma Onda (Zen-surfismo)", another Lulu Santos/Nelson Motta partnership and "Um certo alguém". Nelson Cândido Motta Filho (born 29 October 1944, São Paulo, Brazil) is a Brazilian journalist, ghostwriter, songwriter, writer, and record producer. He was part of the bossa nova movement, collaborating with Edu Lobo, Dori Caymmi, Lulu Santos, Rita Lee, Djavan and others, and producer for several MPB artists, such as Elis Regina, Gal Costa, Daniela Mercury and others. Bolero
Bolero is a genre of song which originated in eastern Cuba in the late 19th century as part of the trova tradition. Unrelated to the older Spanish dance of the same name, bolero is characterized by sophisticated lyrics dealing with love. It has been called the "quintessential Latin American romantic song of the twentieth century". Unlike the simpler, thematically diverse ''canción'', bolero did not stem directly from the European lyrical tradition, which included Italian opera and canzone, popular in urban centers like Havana at the time. Instead, it was born as a form of romantic folk poetry cultivated by a new breed of troubadour from Santiago de Cuba, the ''trovadores''. Zen In The Art Of Archery
''Zen in the Art of Archery'' (Zen in der Kunst des Bogenschießens) is a book by German philosophy professor Eugen Herrigel, published in 1948, about his experiences studying Kyūdō, a form of Japanese archery, when he lived in Japan in the 1920s. It is credited with introducing Zen to Western audiences in the late 1940s and 1950s. Origin Herrigel (1884–1955) was a German professor of philosophy, with a special interest in mysticism. From 1924 to 1929 he taught philosophy in Japan, and studied Kyūdō (the art of the Japanese bow) under a master named Awa Kenzô. Awa taught kyūdō in a way that was regarded by some as a mystical religion, called '' Daishadokyo''. Daishadokyo was an approach to kyūdō that placed great emphasis on the spiritual aspect and differed from much of the mainstream practice at the time. Eugen Herrigel
Eugen Herrigel (20 March 1884 – 18 April 1955) was a German philosopher who taught philosophy at Tohoku Imperial University in Sendai, Japan, from 1924 to 1929 and introduced Zen to large parts of Europe through his writings. While living in Japan from 1924 to 1929, he studied ''kyūdō'', traditional Japanese archery, under Awa Kenzō (阿波研造:1880-1939), a master of archery and founder of his own new religious movement called "The Great Doctrine of the Way of Shooting." Herrigel pursued archery in the hope of better understanding Zen.
