The Communist Party of Hawaii was the regional party of the Communist Party USA in the United States Territory of Hawaii founded in 1934 by American communist Bill Bailey. Appeal The party targeted poor working class such as the stevedores and plantation workers in the Territory. Unions The Communist Party was involved with forming labor unions and organizing labor strikes and the general strikes during the nonviolent revolution leading up to the "Revolution of 1954". Decline Hawaii 7 In an attempt to stop the movement the FBI launched synchronized raids in 1951, rounding up seven prominent members of the party including chairman Charles Fujimoto. The seven detainees became known as the Hawaii 7 and were charged with conspiracy to overthrow the territorial government. Following the raids the party went into hiding. Franklin Odo
Franklin S. Odo (May 6, 1939 – September 28, 2022) was a Japanese American author, scholar, activist, and historian. Odo served as the director of the Asian Pacific American Program at the Smithsonian Institution from the program's inception in 1997 until his retirement in 2010. As the director of the APA Program, Odo brought numerous exhibits to the Smithsonian highlighting the experiences of Chinese Americans, Native Hawaiians, Japanese Americans, Filipino Americans, Vietnamese Americans, Korean Americans, and Indian Americans. He was the first Asian Pacific American curator at the National Museum of American History. He taught American Studies at Amherst College until his death. A nonviolent revolution is a revolution conducted primarily by unarmed civilians using tactics of civil resistance, including various forms of nonviolent protest, to bring about the departure of governments seen as entrenched and authoritarian without the use or threat of violence. The politics of the U.S. state of Hawaii typically take place within the framework of a Democrat-dominated government. The Democratic Party in Hawaii was formed in 1900, by supporters of Queen Liliʻuokalani. For the first half of the twentieth century, the Republican Party ruled comfortably, dominating local politics until the end of World War II. After the war, Honolulu police officer John A. Burns began organizing plantation laborers, including many Japanese Americans and Filipino Americans and built a coalition that gradually strengthened the Democratic Party in Hawaii. The International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) is a labor union which primarily represents dock workers on the West Coast of the United States, Hawaii, and in British Columbia, Canada. It disaffiliated from the AFL–CIO on August 30, 2013. Jack Wayne Hall
Jack Wayne Hall (February 28, 1915 – January 2, 1971) was an American labor organizer and trade unionist. He was the Hawaii Regional Director of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union. Early life Hall was born in Ashland, Wisconsin on February 28, 1915. When he was a child, his mother committed suicide. He was raised in Los Angeles by his grandmother. After graduating from Huntington Park High School in 1931, Hall became a merchant seaman and sailed aboard the SS President Hoover. His experience traveling in Asia and witnessing poverty and the effects of colonialism led him to become a communist. Career Hall's first labor strike was the 1934 West Coast waterfront strike as a member of the Sailors Union of the Pacific. The Hawaii Democratic Revolution of 1954 is a popular term for the territorial elections of 1954 in which the long dominance of the Hawaii Republican Party in the legislature came to an abrupt end, replaced by the Democratic Party of Hawaii which has remained dominant since. The shift was preceded by general strikes, protests, and other acts of civil disobedience that took place in the Hawaiian Archipelago. The strikes by the Isles' labor workers demanded similar pay and benefits to their Mainland counterparts. The strikes also crippled the power of the sugarcane plantations and the Big Five Oligopoly over their workers. Prelude Hawaii had a dominant-party system since the 1887 revolution.
