Croisilles, Pas-de-Calais
Croisilles () is a village and commune in the Pas-de-Calais department of the Hauts-de-France region of France. Geography A small farming village located 8 miles (13 km) south of Arras at the junction of the D5 and D9 roads. Many of the residents commute to work in Arras or the town of Bapaume to the south. The village is bypassed to the north and east by the LGV Nord high speed line and the A1 Autoroute. The junction with the Angy branch of the LGV Nord, in the direction of Arras, is located to the north of Croisilles. In addition to its church, the village has two bars, a supermarket (including petrol station), a pharmacy, a post office and a small DIY store, which is operated by the local farmers' co-operative. There is also a village stadium (including indoor sports hall), an ecole maternale (kindergarten) and an ecole primaire (primary school), which is attached to the mairie (town hall). Ervillers
Ervillers is a commune in the Pas-de-Calais department in the Hauts-de-France region of France. Geography A farming village situated south of Arras at the junction of the N17, D36 and D9 roads. History Prehistoric fossils have been found here, including elephant teeth. Roman objects such as coins, vases, skeletons and evidence of buildings have also been unearthed. This demonstrates that Ervillers was inhabited in Roman times, especially at the place called "Capieau". The parish was first recorded in the 12th century. The seigneurie of Ervillers has passed down through the families of Viéville, Lalaing, Egmont, Luxembourg, and Diesbach-Belleroche. On 28 August 1654 Ervillers saw a visit from Louis XIV and the Queen mother, who lunched there while travelling on to Péronne and Arras, where the siege had been lifted by Marshal Turenne. Noreuil
Noreuil () is a commune in the Pas-de-Calais department in the Hauts-de-France region of France. Geography Noreuil is situated southeast of Arras, on the D5 road. Population History World War One In 1917 it was the location of fighting during World War I. In early 1917, General John Gellibrand, acting commander of the 2nd Division, advanced as he suspected that the Germans were withdrawing. Gellibrand's advance began well but ended with a disastrous, ill-planned and ill-executed "unauthorised" attack on Noreuil. On the morning of 2 April 1917, the village was attacked by the 50th and 51st Battalions, with the 49th and 52nd in support. Danish-born Australian Private Jørgen Christian Jensen of the 50th Battalion was awarded the Victoria Cross for the part he played.
