Occitania (administrative Region)
Occitania ( ; french: Occitanie ; oc, Occità nia ; ca, Occità nia ) is the southernmost administrative region of metropolitan France excluding Corsica, created on 1 January 2016 from the former regions of Languedoc-Roussillon and Midi-Pyrénées. The Council of State approved Occitania as the new name of the region on 28 September 2016, coming into effect on 30 September 2016. An agglomeration community (french: communauté d'agglomération) is a government structure in France, created by the Chevènement Law of 1999. It is one of four forms of intercommunality, less integrated than a métropole or a communauté urbaine but more integrated than a communauté de communes. Agglomeration communities consist of a commune of at least 15,000 inhabitants (or a prefecture with less than 15,000 inhabitants) and its independent suburbs. Villeneuve-lès-Avignon (; Provençal: ''Vilanòva d’Avinhon'') is a commune in the Gard department in southern France. It can also be spelled ''Villeneuve-lez-Avignon''. History In the 6th century the Benedictine abbey of St André was founded on Mount Andaon, and the village which grew up round it took its name. The city itself was founded by Philippe le Bel and boasts a castle he built, Fort Saint-André. Sauveterre (; oc, Sauvatèrra) is a commune in the Gard department in southern France. Geography The village is located between the towns of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon in the south and Roquemaure in the north, and bounded by the Rhône River in the east, and the commune of Pujaut in the west. Amenities The village is primarily a farming community, with a dozen or so shops providing essential local foodstuffs and services, including bakeries, a hairdresser, a grocery, a video rental, two bar-restaurants, a car repair garage, a post office, the town hall and community centre, and a small modern housing development. Roquemaure, Gard
Roquemaure (; oc, Ròcamaura; Provençal dialect, Provençal: ''Recamaulo'') is a small town and Communes of France, commune in the Gard Departments of France, department of southern France. The town lies north of Avignon on the right bank of the Rhône. In 2017 the commune had a population of 5,481. Roquemaure was the site of a royal castle during the medieval period but after the French Revolution the castle was dismantled and now only two towers remain. In the 18th century Roquemaure was the centre of attempts to regulate the production of wine in the area and the term "Côte du Rhône" was coined. The town is infamous as the site where phylloxera, a pest of grapevines, was introduced into France from North America via England in the 1860s. Pujaut (; oc, Puejaut) is a commune in the Gard department in southern France. The village is situated on the south side of a small hill overlooking a flat plain that once formed the bed of a lake.
