Montmorency () is a commune in the northern suburbs of Paris, France. It is located from the center of Paris. Montmorency was the fief of the Montmorency family, one of the oldest and most distinguished families of the French nobility. It is now a wealthy suburb of Paris. Name The name Montmorency was recorded for the first time in Medieval Latin as ''Mons Maurentiacus'' (attested in 993). ''Mons Maurentiacus'', literally "Mount Maurentiacus", was the name given to the promontory over which a castle was built in the Early Middle Ages. ''Maurentiacus'', the name of the area surrounding the promontory, meant "estate of Maurentius", probably a Gallo-Roman landowner. In 1689 Montmorency was officially renamed ''Enghien'', but the village on the slopes of the promontory was still referred to as "Montmorency" by most people. Enghien-les-Bains () is a commune in the northern suburbs of Paris, France. It is located from the centre of Paris, in the département of Val-d'Oise. Enghien-les-Bains is famous as a spa resort and a well-to-do suburb of Paris, developed in the nineteenth century around the scenic lake of Enghien. A casino, the only one in the vicinity of Paris, is located on the shores of the lake. Name The suffix ''les Bains'' (literally "the Baths") was added to the name when the ''commune'' was incorporated in 1850, to distinguish this place from the Belgian city of Enghien, near Mons, and to acknowledge the thermal baths for which Enghien-les-Bains is famous. The name Enghien itself does refer to the Belgian city, which was a fief of the princes of Condé, a cadet branch of the French royal family, who inherited the duchy of Montmorency in 1633. History On August 7, 1850, a part of the territory of Saint-Gratien was detached and merged with a part of the territory of Deuil-la-Barre, a part of the territory of Soisy-sous-Montmorency, and a part of the territory of Épinay-sur-Seine to create the commune of Enghien-les-Bains. On that occasion the commune of Saint-Gratien lost the scenic lake now known as the Lake of Enghien. Groslay
Groslay () is a commune in the Val-d'Oise department in Île-de-France in northern France. It is located 15 km north of Paris, the capital. Boundaries The commune is bounded with Montmorency, Saint-Brice-sous-Forêt, Sarcelles, Deuil-la-Barre and Montmagny. History The name comes from ''Graua'', a Gaulish word, that means "terrain with pebbles". The nature of the soil was particularly favorable for wine growing, which was exploited here from antiquity until the late 19th century phylloxera epidemic. The name was first mentioned in an act of donations from the Abbey of Saint-Denis in 862. The first master of Groslay was Odon or Éudes of Groslay in the late 11th century. In the 13th century, the village became a fief of the House of Montmorency, in the 17th century of the House of Condé.
