Mantes-la-Jolie
Mantes-la-Jolie (, often informally called Mantes) is a commune in the Yvelines department in the Île-de-France region of north-central France. It is located to the west of Paris, from the centre of the capital. Mantes-la-Jolie is a subprefecture; in 2016, it had a population of 44,231. History Mantes was halfway between the centres of power of the dukes of Normandy at Rouen and the Kings of France at Paris. Along with most of northern France, it changed hands frequently in the Hundred Years' War. Philip Augustus died at Mantes, 14 July 1223. Louis XIV instituted the manufacture of musical instruments in Mantes, and it was chosen as the centre of brass and woodwind instrument manufacture. In the 19th century, painters were attracted to the town, particularly Corot, whose paintings of the bridge and the cathedral are celebrated. Mantes-la-Ville
Mantes-la-Ville () is a commune in the Yvelines department in the Île-de-France region in north-central France. It is located in the western suburbs of Paris from the center. Mantes-la-Ville is located at the confluence of the Seine and the Vaucouleurs. The Paris–Rouen rail line separates Mantes-la-Ville from the larger commune of Mantes-la-Jolie. The A13 autoroute to Normandy also passes through Mantes-la-Ville. Population Inhabitants are called ''Mantevillois''. Approximately one-third of the town's population is Muslim. Economy Mantes-la-Ville is the headquarters of two world-renowned makers of wind instruments: Henri Selmer and Buffet Crampon. Eduard Beaugnier et Cie, another saxophone manufacturer, was also based in Mantes until the company closed down in the early 1970s. Magnanville
Magnanville () is a commune in the Yvelines department in the Île-de-France region in north-central France. It was one of the thirty communes in the Communauté d'agglomération de Mantes-en-Yvelines, merged into the Communauté urbaine Grand Paris Seine et Oise in 2016. History Until the twentieth century, Magnanville had a population of only about 100 people. The village expanded in the twentieth century, with significant house building taking place from the 1970s. Archaeological excavations have found evidence of a small agricultural settlement in the fifth century BCE. In 1750 Charles Savalette, keeper of the Royal Exchequer, employed the architect François Franque to build the chateau de Magnanville on the site of a smaller chateau that had fallen into disrepair. The chateau was demolished in 1803, but one wing was rebuilt four years later by Baron Jacques-Florent Robillard, governor of the Bank of France. Guerville, Yvelines
Guerville () is a commune in the Yvelines department in the Île-de-France region in north-central France. History Henri, count of Guerville, went to Jerusalem on crusade in the 12th century. On his return he established the priory of Secqueval, of which only ruins of the chapel remain. One holder of the title served under Louis XIV, as the head of royal hunting (the " Grand Écuyer of France"). At the time of the French revolution, the last male heir fled to London where his wife died. He returned to France with his two daughters and was buried in Ferrières-en-Gâtinais.
