Committee For The Prevention Of Torture (Russia)
The Crew Against Torture (NGO CAT; russian: Кома́нда прóтив пы́ток, founded as Committee Against Torture, Комитет против пыток, the name was changed in June 2022) is a Russian non-governmental organisation in the field of human rights based in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. CAT provides assistance to victims of torture and conducts independent investigation of torture cases. In addition, CAT publishes reports on systemic problems regarding the ineffectiveness of official investigations and prosecution of torture in Russia. CAT addresses human rights violations relying mostly upon legal mechanisms available at the national level. In case the national mechanisms have proven ineffective, CAT helps victims to apply to the international human rights bodies (mainly, to the European Court of Human Rights) and represents them in proceedings. 2014 Grozny Clashes
On 4 December 2014, a group of armed militants of the jihadist organization Caucasus Emirate attacked a traffic police checkpoint outside the city of Grozny, Chechnya, Russia. The militants then entered the city and occupied the "Press House" building in the city center and a nearby school. According to the BBC, the Islamists had claimed to have launched a suicide attack in response to purported attacks by security forces on Muslim women. Timeline On 4 December 2014, a group of Islamist militants, in three vehicles, killed three traffic policemen, after the latter had attempted to stop them at a checkpoint in the outskirts of Grozny. Ramzan Akhmadovich Kadyrov ce, КъадаргӀеран Ахьмат-кӏант Рамзан, translit= (born 5 October 1976) is a Russian politician who currently serves as the Head of the Chechen Republic. He was formerly affiliated to the Chechen Independence movement, through his father who was the separatist appointed mufti of Chechnya. He is a colonel general in the Russian military.
