Commissioner Of Laws
The Commissioner of Laws (also Commissioner of Law and Commissioner for Laws) is an office in Malta that was established by the 1980 Revisions of Statutory Laws Act. The first commissioner was Franco Debono, whose appointment was widely publicised in the Maltese media. His appointment by the Labour led administration was lambasted by the Leader of the Opposition Lawrence Gonzi, as his party was not consulted beforehand while others argued Debono's past as a rebel MP should have motivated the government to pick a "more unifying figure." According to Labour MP Owen Bonnici in 2013, the responsibilities of the post include working to remove conflicting, unconstitutional and human rights-breaching laws. Joseph Muscat
Joseph Muscat (born 22 January 1974) is a Maltese politician who served as the prime minister of Malta from 2013 to 2020, and as the leader of the Labour Party from June 2008 to January 2020. Muscat was re-elected as prime minister in the elections of 3 June 2017 (55.04% after 54.83% in 2013). Previously he was a member of the European Parliament (MEP) from 2004 to 2008. He was the leader of the opposition from October 2008 to March 2013. Franco Debono
Franco Debono (born 9 March 1974) is a Maltese criminal trial lawyer and former Nationalist member of Parliament. In 1998, while still a university law student, he contested the general election on the Nationalist Party ticket and received 467 votes. In 1999 he graduated as a lawyer from the University of Malta and got his warrant to practice as a lawyer before the Maltese Superior and Inferior Courts on 9 March 2000. He set up his private practice in Zurrieq a village in the fifth district, his electoral constituency. From the very start he specialised in criminal law. In 2003 he contested the general election with the Nationalist Party again and polled 1132 votes. From 2008 until 2013 Debono served one term as Member of Parliament for the Nationalist Party. The Labour Party ( mt, Partit Laburista, PL), formerly known as the Malta Labour Party ( mt, Partit tal-Ħaddiema, MLP), is one of the two major political parties in Malta, along with the Nationalist Party. Owen Bonnici (born 24 May 1980) is a Maltese politician who is currently serving as the Minister for the National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government. He previously served as Pariamentary Secretary for Justice, Minister for Justice, Culture and Local Government, Minister for Education and Employment, and Minister Equality, Research and Innovation.
