Comanche Electric Cooperative
Comanche Electric Cooperative, Inc. is a non-profit rural electric utility cooperative headquartered in Comanche, Texas, United States of America. The cooperative was organized in 1938 through the Rural Electrification Act and serves portions of seven counties in the state of Texas, in a territory generally surrounding Comanche. It was the first REA electric cooperative to have an affiliated women's club. Comanche is a city located in Comanche County in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 4,335 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Comanche County. History A military road known as the "Corn Trail" came through in 1850 to supply area forts and encourage settlement. The town was established in 1856 and the city was incorporated in 1858. Rural Electrification Act
The Rural Electrification Act of 1936, enacted on May 20, 1936, provided federal loans for the installation of electrical distribution systems to serve isolated rural areas of the United States. The funding was channeled through cooperative electric power companies, hundreds of which still exist today. These member-owned cooperatives purchased power on a wholesale basis and distributed it using their own network of transmission and distribution lines. Brazos Electric Power Cooperative is an electrical generation and transmission cooperative based in Waco, Texas. In March 2021, it filed for bankruptcy protection as a result of losses arising from the February 2021 North American ice storm. Operations In 2013, Brazos began constructing its current headquarters in Waco's Texas Central Industrial park. Brazos operates four plants which can produce up to 2,909 megawatts of electricity.
