Columbus and Chattahoochee Railroad is a freight railroad running from Girard, Alabama, to Mahrt, Alabama and has shared trackage rights with the Norfolk Southern to use the track between NS Columbus yard in Columbus, Georgia and Girard, AL. This track runs concurrent with 9th St. in downtown Columbus and is shared as part of the designated yard limits for Columbus Yard. CHH interchanges with the Norfolk Southern at Columbus Yard. Girard, Alabama
Girard, Alabama was a city in the far north-east corner of Russell County, Alabama across the Chattahoochee River from Columbus, Georgia. Named after the Philadelphia-based banker and philanthropist Stephen Girard, who had purchased much of the Muscogee territory that would become Russell County, the town of Girard served as the county's first seat from 1832 to 1839. It was incorporated around 1833. In 1923 Girard merged with Phenix City, Alabama. Mahrt is an unincorporated community in Russell County, Alabama. The community is home to a paper mill and a rail terminus. Mahrt is located along the Chattahoochee River. It is 40 river miles south of Columbus, Georgia and on the other side of the river in Alabama. The mill had various owners including MeadWestvaco (which became part of WestRock). Al H.
