Columbina
Columbina (in Italian Colombina, meaning "little dove"; in French and English Colombine) is a stock character in the ''commedia dell'arte''. She is Harlequin's mistress, a comic servant playing the tricky slave type, and wife of Pierrot. Rudlin and Crick use the Italian spelling Colombina in ''Commedia dell'arte: A Handbook for Troupes''. History The role of the female servant was originally that of an entr'acte dancer. Women were not allowed to be part of the story that was being played out on stage, but they were allowed to have a dance in-between the action. Eventually these women became the busom and gossipy servants of characters that were already allowed on stage, and then, later, the counterparts to the Zanni characters. She was very down to earth and could always see the situation for what it actually was. She was also sometimes portrayed as a prostitute. She was very infrequently without something to say to or about someone. She is dressed in a very short ragged and ...

Columbina (bird)
''Columbina'' is a genus of small doves in the family Columbidae that live in the New World. They range from the southern United States through Central America and much of South America. ''Columbina'' doves are normally found in pairs or small flocks and generally occur in open country. They have maroon irides and pinkish legs. In flight, some species show a distinctive flash of rufous in the wings, while others show black-and-white wing-patterns. The genus was introduced in 1825 by the German naturalist Johann Baptist von Spix. The name is from Latin ''columbinus'' meaning "of a dove" or "dove-like". The type species was designated as the ''C. strepitans'' by English zoologist George Robert Gray in 1841. This taxon is now considered as a subspecies of the picui ground dove ''Columbina picui strepitans''. The genus contains nine species: * Inca dove, ''Columbina inca'' * Scaled dove, ''Columbina squammata'' * Common ground dove, ''Columbina passerina'' * Plain-breasted ground do ...

Flora (Francesco Melzi)
''Flora'' (also ''La Columbina'' or ''Columbine'') is a painting by Francesco Melzi (Italian, 1491–1570), completed circa 1520. It depicts the Roman mythological figure Flora, the goddess of springtime and flowers, a popular subject among Renaissance artists. The painting was in the collection of Maria de’ Medici in 1649 and has been in the collection of Hermitage Museum since 1850. Analysis ''Flora'' was painted in the style typical of the Leonardeschi, utilizing Leonardo da Vinci's female facial type with downcast eyes, Leonardo's sfumato technique, and displaying Leonardo's penchant for careful observation of plants and hair. In the composition, Flora is seated in a grotto, surrounded by ferns and ivy. She wears the costume of an ancient Roman, with a white stola embroidered in gold and with a blue palla thrown over one shoulder. In her lap are white jasmines, and in her left hand she holds a spray of columbine that formerly gave the painting its title. The plants s ...
