Columbia, Newberry And Laurens Railroad
The Columbia, Newberry and Laurens Railroad was a railroad line between Columbia and Laurens. In 1885, the South Carolina General Assembly issued a charter for the Columbia, Newberry and Laurens Railroad, and the line was officially christened on Christmas Day 1885. In 1890, work began on the track and by July 1891, the line was complete from Columbia through Newberry to Dover Junction, nearly north of the state capital. In 1896, the Laurens Railroad was purchased from the Richmond & Danville Railroad to complete the line to Laurens. The first locomotive of the CN&L was built in 1887 and sold in 1922. The CN&L ran daily passenger trains from Union Station in Columbia to Laurens, always pulled by steam until the early 1930s, when it switched to its own station in Columbia at 630 Gervais Street. Prosperity, South Carolina
Prosperity is a town in Newberry County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,180 at the 2010 census. History Before being named Prosperity, the area was called Frog Level due to its low-lying location and large numbers of frogs living in adjacent ponds. Captain Matthew Hall settled in the area in 1827, and established a store and post office in the early 1830s. The town expanded with the arrival of the railroad in the 1850s, and in later decades would profit from its location along two major rail lines. CN&L Subdivision
The CN&L Subdivision is a railroad line owned and operated by CSX Transportation in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The line runs from Columbia northwest to north of Laurens along the former Columbia, Newberry and Laurens Railroad. At its southeast end, the CN&L connects to the Hamlet Subdivision, Eastover Subdivision, and Columbia Subdivision. Atlantic Coast Line Railroad
The Atlantic Coast Line Railroad was a United States Class I railroad formed in 1900, though predecessor railroads had used the ACL brand since 1871. In 1967 it merged with long-time rival Seaboard Air Line Railroad to form the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad. Much of the original ACL network has been part of CSX Transportation since 1986. The Atlantic Coast Line served the Southeast, with a concentration of lines in Florida. Numerous named passenger trains were operated by the railroad for Florida-bound tourists, with the Atlantic Coast Line contributing significantly to Florida's economic development in the first half of the 20th century. Joanna, South Carolina
Joanna is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Laurens County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,539 at the 2010 census, down from 1,609 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Greenville– Mauldin– Easley Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The community was first settled in the 1760s. By the 1850s, the town was known as "Martin's Depot", in honor of a local planter, Martin Kinard, who had helped bring the Laurens Railroad through. On April 30, 1865, Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his cabinet passed through the town on their flight from Richmond and spent the night at the Lafayette Young house, to the southwest. Little Mountain is a town in Newberry County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 291 at the 2010 census. The town took its name from nearby Little Mountain. History The mountain is a monadnock, which is an isolated mountain or rock that has resisted the process of erosion and stands alone in an otherwise flat area. The Little Mountain Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. Early history The mountain was referred to as Ruff's Mountain until sometime in the 1800s. It was part of Lexington County until 1917, when the current border was established. Property in this area was not recorded in the Newberry County tax records until some time in the 1920s. Chapin, popularly known as the "Capital of Lake Murray", is a small lake town located at the northern tip of Lexington County, South Carolina, United States.
