The Collegiata di Castell'Arquato, also known as the Collegiata di Santa Maria, is a Romanesque architecture, Romanesque-style, Roman Catholic church located in the Castell'Arquato, province of Piacenza, in Emilia-Romagna, Italy. History and description Documents allege a church existed at the site by 756. Of that building, only the baptismal font seems to have survived. The 1117 Verona earthquake, earthquake of 1117 prompted a major reconstruction, and a new building consecrated in 1122. The ''Portal of Paradise'' retains some of the Romanesque sculptural elements, with a relief depicting Madonna and Child with St Peter and Angels. The portico on the left of the church with octagonal columns, church cloister, and bell-tower, date to the 15th century. The church facade was also completed in the 15th century. A ''castell'' () is a Human tower (gymnastic formation), human tower built traditionally at festivals in Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, Balearic islands and the Valencian Community. At these festivals, several ''colles castelleres'' (teams that build towers) attempt to build and dismantle a tower's structure. On 16 November 2010, ''castells'' were declared by UNESCO to be amongst the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Origin Although based on the earlier traditional Muixeranga of Algemesà in Valencia, the tradition of ''castells'' within Catalonia originated in the ''Ball dels Valencians'' (Valencian Dance) in Valls, near the city of Tarragona, first documented in 1712. 1117 Verona Earthquake
An earthquake, rated at IX (''Violent'') on the Mercalli intensity scale, struck northern Italy and Germany on 3 January 1117 in Italy, 1117. The epicentre of the first shock was near Verona, the city which suffered the most damage. The outer wall of the Verona Arena was partially felled, and the standing portion was damaged in a later earthquake of 1183.
