Colette Van Den Keere
Colette van den Keere (sometimes known as Colette Hondius after her marriage) (1568–1629) was a Dutch engraver who was the sister of engraver Pieter van den Keere. She married his master, the cartographer Jodocus Hondius in 1587 and she ran the family business for several years. She is credited with engraving a posthumous portrait of her husband. Biography Colette van den Keere was born in Ghent in The Netherlands around 1568, the daughter of foundry artist Hendrik van den Keere, also named Henry du Tour, and Elisabeth van Estelaer. Colette's family, Protestant refugees, temporarily settled in London, England, between 1584 and 1593 after which the family returned to Amsterdam to live permanently. Jodocus Hondius
Jodocus Hondius (Latinized version of his Dutch language, Dutch name: ''Joost de Hondt'') (17 October 1563 – 12 February 1612) was a Flemish people, Flemish and Dutch engraving, engraver and cartographer. He is sometimes called Jodocus Hondius the Elder to distinguish him from his son Jodocus Hondius II. Hondius is best known for his early maps of the New World and Europe, for re-establishing the reputation of the work of Gerardus Mercator, Gerard Mercator, and for his portraits of Francis Drake. He inherited and republished the plates of Mercator, thus reviving his legacy, also making sure to include independent revisions to his work. Gerardus Mercator
Gerardus Mercator (; 5 March 1512 – 2 December 1594) was a 16th-century geographer, cosmographer and cartographer from the County of Flanders. He is most renowned for creating the 1569 world map based on a new projection which represented sailing courses of constant bearing ( rhumb lines) as straight lines—an innovation that is still employed in nautical charts. Pieter Van Den Keere
Pieter van den Keere ( la, Petrus Kaerius 1571 – c. 1646) was a Flemish engraver, publisher and globe maker who worked for the most part of his career in England and the Dutch Republic. Life He was born in Ghent, son of engraver Hendrik van den Keere, and around 1583-4 moved with his family for religious reasons to London. His sister, Colette van den Keere, who immigrated with van den Keere married Jodocus Hondius three years later. In London, van den Keere received training as an engraver from Jodocus Hondius, his brother-in-law. In 1593, both Keere and Hondius settled in Amsterdam. In Amsterdam he was betrothed on 7 September 1599 to Anna Burts or Beurt from Ghent, but he became betrothed again there on 10 March 1623 to a widow from Hoorn, Anna Winnens van Gent, possibly due to the death of his first wife. Jan Janssonius
Johannes Janssonius (1588, Arnhem – buried July 11, 1664, Amsterdam) (born Jan Janszoon, in English also Jan Jansson) was a Dutch cartographer and publisher who lived and worked in Amsterdam in the 17th century. Biography Janssonius was born in Arnhem, the son of Jan Janszoon the Elder, a publisher and bookseller. In 1612 he married Elisabeth de Hondt, the daughter of Jodocus Hondius. He produced his first maps in 1616 of France and Italy. In 1623 Janssonius owned a bookstore in Frankfurt am Main, later also in Danzig, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, Königsberg, Geneva and Lyon. His wife Elisabeth died in 1627 and he married Elisabeth Carlier in 1629. He formed a partnership with his brother in law Henricus Hondius, and together they published atlases as Mercator/Hondius/Janssonius.
