Cole of California is a swimwear brand, known for innovations in fashionable swimwear Early history and swimwear Established in 1917 by F.L and Joseph Drane in Vernon, California, West Coast Knitting Mills made men's long knitted underwear and socks, quickly becoming the largest knitting mill in the western United States. Apparel manufacturer Morris Cohn obtained an interest in the company in the early 1920s. Cohn's son Fred Cole was attracted to the family business after a time as a silent movie actor, having changed his name to the more marketable Cole and incurred his family's disapproval over his first choice of career. Fred Cole (May 21, 1901 – September 19, 1964), born Frederick Cohn, was an American leader in women's swimwear fashions in the 20th century. As Frederick Cole he had a brief career as an actor in silent films before joining the family business, which he eventually transformed into the Cole of California brand. Early life and acting career Frederick Cohn was born May 21, 1901 in Los Angeles to Morris Cohn and Edith Armer Cohn. Morris Cohn had established Morris Cohn & Company in Los Angeles by 1890, making men's work clothes. Cohn graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1923, but did not immediately join the family business, starting a brief career as an actor in silent movies in 1924 and 1925. Catalina is a brand of women’s swimwear. It was once one of the oldest clothing manufacturers in California. Their history began in 1907, as Bentz Knitting Mills, a small manufacturer of underwear and sweaters. The name was changed to Pacific Knitting Mills in 1912, accompanied by the introduction of swimwear to their existing knit lines. The name was changed again finally to Catalina in 1928. Catalina founded the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants as a promotion. Margit Felligi or Margit Felligi Laszlo (1903 – 1975) was an American clothing designer, notable for her work with Cole of California in swimwear. Early life Margit Felligi was born in 1903 in Saint Louis, Missouri, the daughter of Hungarian immigrants Emil Felligi and Elizabeth Jilly. She was educated at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, where she studied art, as well as dance. She moved to Beverly Hills, California to design and create costumes for movies. Esther Jane Williams (August 8, 1921 – June 6, 2013) was an American competitive swimmer and actress. She set regional and national records in her late teens on the Los Angeles Athletic Club swim team. Unable to compete in the 1940 Summer Olympics because of the outbreak of World War II, she joined Billy Rose's Aquacade, where she took on the role vacated by Eleanor Holm after the show's move from New York City to San Francisco.
