Coburn Classical Institute
The Coburn Classical Institute was a college preparatory school in Waterville, Maine, which operated from 1828–1970. Waterville Academy In its early years, Waterville College (now Colby College) had maintained a Latin school in the college buildings. Around 1828, the college trustees wanted a classical academy to prepare boys for entrance to the college. Land was donated by Hon. Timothy Boutelle, and funds raised by the college president Jeremiah Chaplin, for a small brick building in which the school went into operation in the fall of 1829. The school was under the charge of Henry W. Paine, then a member of the senior class at the college. Regarded as an appendage to the college, no act of incorporation was sought. There were 61 students in the school's first year. For about two years, 1839 and 1840, Waterville Academy was closed. Coburn is a census-designated place (CDP) in Centre County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is part of the State College, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 236 at the 2010 census. Geography Coburn is located in eastern Centre County, in the eastern part of Penn Township. The town is sited at the junction of Pine Creek and Penns Creek, where Penns Creek turns south, leaving the Penns Valley, and begins slicing through a series of Appalachian Mountain ridges, starting with First Mountain at the southern edge of Coburn. The borough of Millheim is north of Coburn. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of , all land. Coburn Mountain is a mountain located in Somerset County, Maine. Coburn Mtn. lies within the watershed of the Kennebec River. The northern end of the southeast side of Coburn drains into Mountain Brook, then into Cold Stream and the Kennebec River. The southern end drains into Salmon Stream, then into the Dead River, another tributary of the Kennebec River. The southwest end of Coburn drains into Enchanted Pond and Enchanted Stream, then into the Dead River.
