The Coalition démocratique de Montréal (English: Democratic Coalition of Montreal) was a left-of-centre municipal political party that existed in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, from 1989 to 2001. History Formation and 1990 election The Democratic Coalition was launched on December 21, 1989, by Marvin Rotrand, Sam Boskey, Pierre-Yves Melançon and Pierre Goyer. All four were sitting members of the Montreal city council who had previously left the governing Montreal Citizens' Movement (MCM), on the grounds that it had abandoned its progressive roots and commitment to open government. Melançon was chosen as the party's first interim leader. The party was officially recognized by the province of Quebec on March 8, 1990. The Democratic Coalition campaigned on a strong environmental platform in the 1990 municipal election, while also supporting proportional representation and renewed investment in public transit. 2001 Montreal Municipal Election
The 2001 Montreal municipal election took place on November 4, 2001, to elect a mayor and city councillors in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Gérald Tremblay defeated incumbent Pierre Bourque to become mayor of the newly amalgamated city. This was the only municipal election that was held for the amalgamated city (the amalgamation took effect on January 1, 2002), as the next municipal election was for the defused city. Pierre Bourque (born 29 May 1942) is a businessman and politician in Quebec, Canada. He founded the Vision Montreal political party and served as mayor of Montreal from 1994 to 2001. Yolande Cohen
Yolande Cohen (born 1950) is a Moroccan-born Canadian historian and professor of contemporary history whose research focuses upon History of Youth and the History of Women. A Moroccan Sephardi, she also focuses on the History of Moroccan Jews. Coalition Démocratique–Montréal Écologique (English: Democratic Coalition–Ecology Montreal) was a municipal political party that existed from 1994 to 1998 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The party was initially led by Yolande Cohen, who was also its candidate for mayor in the 1994 municipal election. Origins As its name implies, the party was formed by a merger of two pre-existing political parties: the Democratic Coalition and Ecology Montreal. These groups had a history of co-operation prior to the merger. Both parties were formed as breakaway groups from the left wing of the governing Montreal Citizens' Movement (MCM) in late 1989, and they had refrained from running candidates against one another in the mayoral contest and most council races of the 1990 municipal election.
