The Co-Cathedral of St. Therese ( lo, ໂບດກາໂຕລິກ ນັກບຸນເຕເຣຊາ; french: Cocathédrale Sainte-Thérèse de Savannakhet), also called St. Therese Cathedral, is the Roman Catholic Co-Cathedral located in the city of Savannakhet in southern part of Laos, near the border with Thailand. The temple follows the Latin rite and functions as one of the two cathedrals and major churches of the Apostolic Vicariate of Savannakhet (Latin: ''Vicariatus Apostolicus Savannakhetensis''; Laotian: ອັກຄະສາວົກແທນຂອງສະຫວັນນະເຂດ) who was elevated to its current status in 1958 by Pope Pius XII with the Bull ''Qui ad Ecclesiae''. Savannakhet (ສະຫວັນນະເຂດ), officially named Kaysone Phomvihane ( lo, ໄກສອນ ພົມວິຫານ; th, ไกสอน พมวิหาน) since 2005 and previously known as ''Khanthaboury'' (ຄັນທະບູລີ), is a city in western Laos. It is the capital of Savannakhet Province. With a population of 125,760 (2018), it is the second-largest city in Laos, after Vientiane. Although the old French colonial quarter of the town, along the Mekong River-front, is depressed and crumbling, the town's proximity to Thailand's booming economy has brought about new commercial development in the northern part of the town, near both the river crossing and the bus terminal. Thakhek
Thakhek (Lao language: ທ່າແຂກ), the capital of Khammouane Province, is a town in south-central Laos on the Mekong River. The Third Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge, linking Thakhek and Nakhon Phanom, Thailand, across the river, started in 2009 and was opened on 11 November 2011. The city has many French colonial style official buildings, villas, and shops. In 1943, 85% of the population of Thakhek were Vietnamese due to the French policy of encouraging Vietnamese immigrants to Laos. Remnants of the abortive Thakhek-Tan Ap railway can be seen in and near the town.
