''Cliff's Silver Discs'' is a compilation EP by Cliff Richard and the Shadows, released in December 1960. It topped both the ''Record Retailer'' and ''Melody Maker'' EP charts. Release and reception Released at the beginning of December 1960, ''Cliff's Silver Discs'' contains four out of the six silver discs awarded to Richard and the Shadows up until then by '' Disc'' magazine for 250,000 sales. The first three tracks had been released as singles earlier in 1960, with the final track, "Travellin' Light", released the previous year. "Travellin' Light" was recorded in July 1959 and released in October 1959; then "Fall in Love with You", recorded in November 1959, was released in March 1960; then "Please Don't Tease", recorded in March and then released in June 1960; and then finally "Nine Times Out of Ten", also recorded in March, was released in September 1960. "Living Doll" is a song written by Lionel Bart made popular by Cliff Richard and the Shadows (then still 'the Drifters') in 1959. It was the top selling single in the UK in 1959. It has topped the UK charts twice: in its original version in 1959 (their first number 1 single) and a new version recorded in 1986 in aid of Comic Relief. It is one of the few songs released by an English singer to chart on the American Billboard charts before the British Invasion occurred. Tony Meehan
Daniel Joseph Anthony Meehan (2 March 1943 – 28 November 2005), professionally known as Tony Meehan, was a founder member of the British group the Drifters, with Jet Harris, Hank Marvin and Bruce Welch, which would evolve into the Shadows. He played drums on early Cliff Richard and the Shadows hits and on early Shadows instrumentals. Meehan was professionally nicknamed "The Baron" by his many admirers and friends within the British pop-rock music industry. He is reckoned to have influenced many thousands of teenage boys and adolescents to take up music as a career, including Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac, as a result of his iconic film performance in Cliff Richard's film ''The Young Ones''. Hank Brian Marvin (born Brian Robson Rankin, 28 October 1941) is an English multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and songwriter. He is widely known as the lead guitarist for The Shadows, a group which primarily performed instrumentals and was the backing band for Cliff Richard, and subsequently for Marvin, Welch & Farrar. Roy Charles Hammond (August 3, 1939 – September 16, 2020), better known as Roy C or Roy "C", was an American southern soul singer, songwriter and record executive, best known for his 1965 hit, "Shotgun Wedding". Another song, " Impeach the President", which he recorded and produced with a high school group, the Honey Drippers, has had one of the most sampled drum tracks in hip hop music. Sid Tepper (June 25, 1918 – April 24, 2015) was an American songwriter. He is best known for his collaborations with Roy C. Bennett, which spawned several hits for Elvis Presley. Between 1945 and 1970, Tepper and Bennett published over 300 songs. Biography As a youth, Tepper's family moved to Brooklyn, where Tepper met his future musical collaborator, Roy C. Bennett. Their first hit was "Red Roses for a Blue Lady" (1948), recorded by Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians. Over the next 22 years, the songwriting team wrote for Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney, Peggy Lee, Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Dean Martin, and many more. Otis Blackwell (February 16, 1931 – May 6, 2002) was an American songwriter whose work influenced rock and roll. Ian Ralph Samwell (19 January 1937 – 13 March 2003) was an English musician, singer-songwriter and record producer. He is best known as the writer of Cliff Richard's debut single "Move It", and his association with the rock band America, with whom he had his biggest commercial success with their hit single, "A Horse with No Name". He also worked with rock bands, such as the Small Faces, The Grateful Dead, Frank Zappa, Joni Mitchell, John Mayall and Hummingbird. Pete Chester
Peter Charles 'Pete' Chester (born 9 September 1941) is an English drummer and songwriter. He is the son of comedian and broadcaster Charlie Chester. Career Chester started his career by forming the band The Five Chesternuts with Hank Marvin and Bruce Welch in 1957, which released the unsuccessful single "Teenage Love" on the Columbia label and appeared on the ''Six-Five Special'' on BBC television. Marvin and Welch left in 1958 to join Cliff Richard and The Drifters, the forerunner of what became Cliff Richard and The Shadows the following year.
