The Cleveland State Vikings women's basketball team represents Cleveland State University in women's basketball. Since 1994, they have been a member of the Horizon League. Cleveland State University
Cleveland State University (CSU) is a public research university in Cleveland, Ohio. It was established in 1964 and opened for classes in 1965 after acquiring the entirety of Fenn College, a private school that had been in operation since 1923. CSU absorbed the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law (since renamed the Cleveland State University College of Law) in 1969. 2023 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament
The 2023 NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament was a single-elimination tournament of 68 teams to determine the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I college basketball national champion for the 2022–23 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The 41st edition of the tournament began in March 2023, and concluded on April 2, 2023 with the championship game at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. Big Sky champion Sacramento State, Atlantic 10 champion Saint Louis, Southland champion Southeastern Louisiana and WAC champion Southern Utah made their NCAA debuts, while CAA champions Monmouth made its first NCAA appearance since 1983. The 2022–23 Cleveland State Vikings women's basketball team represented Cleveland State University in the 2022–23 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Vikings, led by fifth-year head coach Chris Kielsmeier, played their home games at the Wolstein Center and were members of the Horizon League. It was the 50th season of Cleveland State women's basketball. Previous season The Vikings finished the 2021–22 season 23–9, 14–6 in Horizon League play to finish in a tied for 4th. As a 4th seed in the Horizon League tournament they defeated IUPUI in the quarterfinals and Oakland in the semifinals before advancing to the championship where they lost to IUPUI. They were invited to the WBI where they defeated Northeastern in the first round and Nevada in the semifinals before losing to Saint Mary's in the championship game. The 2022 Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) was a single-elimination tournament consisting of eight National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I teams not selected to participate in the 2022 NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament or 2022 Women's National Invitation Tournament. The 2022 field was announced March 13. The 2022 edition of the tournament was played on the campus of Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky at the Clive M. Beck Center. This was the second year in a row the tournament format consisted of an eight-team field played over four days, with a winners and consolation bracket, guaranteeing three games for all teams. There was no winning percentage requirement to compete in the tournament. Saint Mary's beat the defending WBI champions, Cleveland State, in the final. Chris Kielsmeier
Chris Kielsmeier (born 1975 or 1976) is the women's basketball coach for Cleveland State University since 2018. He began his coaching career at Howard Payne University in 1999 as an assistant coach. As their women's basketball coach from 2000 to 2008, his team won the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament thrice. Upon winning the 2008 NCAA Division III women's basketball tournament, the university had their first title in team sports since leaving the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. After receiving the WBCA National Coach of the Year Award for Division III schools in 2008, Kielsmeier had 179 wins and 44 losses before leaving for Wayne State College that year. At Wayne State from 2008 to 2018, Kielsmeier had 237 wins and 72 losses while receiving two Coach of the Year awards as part of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
