Office description On January 1, 1964, the circuit courts of Cook County were unified. Before this, there were more than 200 separate courts in Cook County. Circuit Court Of Cook County
The Circuit Court of Cook County is the largest of the 24 judicial circuits in Illinois as well as one of the largest unified court systems in the United States — second only in size to the Superior Court of Los Angeles County since that court merged with other courts in 1998. The modern Cook County Circuit Court was created through a 1964 amendment to the Illinois Constitution which reorganized the courts of Illinois. The amendment effectively merged the often confusing and overlapping jurisdictions of Cook County's 161 courts, which were organized as municipal courts (such as the Municipal Court of Chicago) and specialized courts, into one uniform and cohesive court of general jurisdiction, organized into divisions, under the administration of one chief judge. Harold Washington Party
The Harold Washington Party was founded in Chicago in the late 1980s to represent the interests of the city's African-American population who felt disenchanted with the mainline Democratic Party (United States), Democratic Party. The party was created ahead of the 1989 Chicago mayoral special election, 1989 special elections to fill the mayoral vacancy in Chicago created when Harold Washington, Chicago's first black mayor, died in office. It nominated a candidate for the 1989 special election for Chicago mayor as well as and several other offices in Cook County, Illinois, Cook County. The party's nominee in the 1989 special election, Timothy C. Evans received 41% of the vote. In 1990, a court decision denied Harold Washington Party nominees ballot access, which was reported a boon to the Democratic Party slate.
