''Clearing'' is a guitar solo album by England, English guitarist, composer and Improvisation, improvisor Fred Frith. It was Frith's first solo guitar recording since ''Live in Japan (Fred Frith album), Live in Japan'' (1982) and his first solo guitar studio recording since his landmark 1974 album ''Guitar Solos''. ''Clearing'' comprises eleven tracks of unaccompanied and Musical improvisation, improvised music played on prepared guitars by Frith. Ten of the tracks were recorded in Stuttgart, Germany in 1996 and 2000, and one was recorded live at the Konstrukcja w Procesie Festival VII in Bydgoszcz, Poland in 2000. Background In 2000, John Zorn commissioned Frith to make a guitar solo album for Tzadik Records as a follow-up to his 1974 album, ''Guitar Solos''. Fred Frith
Jeremy Webster "Fred" Frith (born 17 February 1949) is an English multi-instrumentalist, composer, and improviser. Probably best known for his guitar work, Frith first came to attention as one of the founding members of the English avant-rock group Henry Cow. He was also a member of the groups Art Bears, Massacre, and Skeleton Crew. He has collaborated with a number of prominent musicians, including Robert Wyatt, Derek Bailey, the Residents, Lol Coxhill, John Zorn, Brian Eno, Mike Patton, Lars Hollmer, Bill Laswell, Iva Bittová, Jad Fair, Kramer, the ARTE Quartett, and Bob Ostertag. ''Rivers and Tides: Working with Time'' is a soundtrack by English guitarist, composer and improvisor Fred Frith, of the 2001 Anglo-German documentary film, ''Rivers and Tides'' by Thomas Riedelsheimer about the British landscape sculptor Andy Goldsworthy. Frith composed all the music for the soundtrack and incorporated sound clips of water from the film in the final mix. The music has been described as chamber and features Frith and a German trio of Karoline Höfler, Bernd Settelmeyer and Wolfgang Stryi. William Richard Frisell (born March 18, 1951) is an American jazz guitarist, composer and arranger. Frisell first came to prominence at ECM Records in the 1980s, as both a session player and a leader. He went on to work in a variety of contexts, notably as a participant in the Downtown Scene in New York City where he formed a long working relationship with composer and saxophonist John Zorn.
