Clara Louise Zinke
Clara Louise Zinke (March 30, 1909 – April 20, 1978) was an American tennis player in the early part of the 20th century. She competed on the national level as a junior and adult. She was a singles finalist in the U.S. National Girls singles championship of 1926, and at the storied international tennis tournament in Cincinnati, she won more total titles (12) than any other woman in tournament history: *Singles titles (5): 1926, '27, '29, '30 & '31 *Mixed doubles Title (1): 1931 *Doubles titles (6): 1927, '28, '30, '31, '32 & '33 She still holds tournament records in Cincinnati for most total finals appearances (18), most singles finals appearances (10) and most doubles finals appearances (7) for both men and women. (The other appearance was in mixed doubles, which she won, in 1931.) In 2004 she was inducted into the Cincinnati Tennis Hall of Fame. Tennis
Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. The object of the game is to manoeuvre the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return. The player who is unable to return the ball validly will not gain a point, while the opposite player will. Tennis is an Olympic sport and is played at all levels of society and at all ages. The sport can be played by anyone who can hold a racket, including wheelchair users. The modern game of tennis originated in Birmingham, England, in the late 19th century as lawn tennis. The Cincinnati Masters or Cincinnati Open (branded as the Western & Southern Open for sponsorship reasons) is an annual outdoor hardcourt tennis event held in Mason, Ohio near Cincinnati. The event started on September 18, 1899, and is the oldest tennis tournament in the United States played in its original city. Catherine Wolf
Catherine E. Wolf (August 23, 1908 – July 20, 1969) was an American amateur tennis player in the 1920s and 1930s. She was born in Jasper, Missouri. Wolf was ranked the number 10 women's tennis player in the United States in 1934 and 1935. Career In 1929, Wolf won the doubles title and was a singles finalist at the Michigan State Championship. In 1930, she won the singles titles at the Western Championship and the Illinois State Championship, and was a doubles finalist (with Eugenie Sampson) in the doubles of the Western Championship. In 1931, Wolf won the singles title at the Western Championship. She also was the singles runner-up in the Western Indoor Championships in 1932 and 1934. George Lott
George Martin Lott (October 16, 1906 – December 3, 1991) was an American tennis player and tennis coach who was born in Springfield, Illinois, United States. Lott is mostly remembered as being one of the greatest doubles players of all time. He won the U.S. title five times with three different partners: John Hennessey in 1928; John Doeg in 1929 and 1930; and Les Stoefen in 1933 and 1934. At the U. S. championships singles in 1928, Lott beat Christian Boussus and John Doeg before losing to Frank Hunter in the semifinals. In 1931 Lott beat defending champion Doeg in the semi finals before losing to Ellsworth Vines in the final. In 1934 Lott became a touring professional, thereby giving up his amateur status and the ability to play in Grand Slam tournaments.
